191910028Avalon Santa Catalina Island Calif 1919. Menu 17.6 x 13.5 cm. 2 pages. A menu for this historic resort hotel on Santa Catalina Island. The Hotel St. Catherine was born of a disastrous fire of 1915 during which the Banning home burnt to the ground taking much of Avalon with it. The Banning family built the original Hotel on the site of the fire opening on June 28 1918 a bit more than a year before this menu was printed. Offerings include Queen Olives Seville olives selected for larger size Steamed Albacore Celery Sauce Fried Honeycomb Tripe a la Horley and Fig Soufflé Pudding. The verso lists "Things to Do" including Glass Bottom Boat Trips – "see the submarine gardens"– Auto Stage Scenic Rides "Cornell's" Isthmus Barbecue Saddle Horses and more. The verso text is framed in an engraved image of sailboats in the sea around the island. Horizontal crease across the center of the leaf otherwise fine. unknown

The Narragansett Hotel "conducted by Chapin & Robinson is one of the largest grandest best furnished and most satisfactorily kept hotels in the world" King's Pocket Book of Providence 1882. One hundred thirty-two dishes in all most handwritten. From the menu collection of hotelier Ferdinand Sperl. A bit of light wear to the edges and some light soil. Still very good. It was located downtown Atlanta on a city block bounded by Peachtree Street Luckie Street Forsyth Street and Williams Street. The hotel closed in 1965 and was demolished in the same year.
