White card stock wrappers embossed upper wrappers with gilt textured white leaves with categorical tabs printed in red and black held together by a red cord tie and stapled now housed in a mylar sleeve. A VG copy. Soiling wrappers upper wrapper with possible water damage tie a bit frayed and sunned some red and black ink markings - adjusting and adding menu items light soiling to some leaves as well as some faint age toning to edges. Overall a nice bright copy. 20 pp. unnumbered. 10-2/8" x 7" <br/><br/>"Railroad magnate Henry Villard financed the Portland Hotel and construction began in 1882 but his finances collapsed—in part because of the Panic of 1884—and the construction stopped for five years. With only the foundation completed the site became known as "Villard's Ruins" and the bodies of two murder victims were found there before construction resumed. George B. Markle Jr. began a campaign to raise local money to complete the hotel. He generated enough interest and subscribers to his plan among them Henry W. Corbett Henry Failing Simeon Reed and William S. Ladd to get construction started again. Later investors included labor leader Ed Boyce. 29018674Paris France: MP Marcel Picardo 12-Jun-02. A single fold menu for Hotel de L'Empire located in Paris France. The menu is most likely for their hotel restaurant and is dated June 12 1902. That night dinners had a choice been Turbot fish in a cream sauce or chicken. The hotel was located at No. 7 Rue Daunou and is no longer in existence though there is a hotel by the same name currently in Paris. The menu also has an advertisement for Redfern a store in Paris that sold Furs Robes Dresses Manteaux coats Lingerie and Trousseaux. Refern was a British tailoring firm founded in 1855 by John Redfern that had several stores across Europe. Its Paris extension was operated as a couture establishment which developed into a leading European Couture house while its other branches were mostly tailors and/or importers. The Paris branch closed in 1940. The menu as well as advertisement have gilded decorative elements with the Refern advertisement featuring a high society lady dressed in a fashionable attire and the menu depicting a hunting scene with a dog rifle and dead hare. Illustrated; printed throughout in black and pale brown. Second edition originally published under the slightly different title Famous Recipes of Famous People and issued by the Hotel del Monte without Sunset Magazine in 1936. A compilation of celebrity recipes with the recipes attributed to the famous including: Gertrude Stein John Steinbeck Walt Disney J. Edgar Hoover Rube Goldberg and many others. Also includes a section of recipes of well-known chefs of the day with a bias toward California Hotels and the west in general as well as a short section of recipes from the Hotel Del Monte. The playful illustrations by Sinclair Ross alternately reference Hollywood and the frontier West. Endpapers reproduce the autographs of many of the celebrities featured in the book. Publisher's gilt-decorated cream-colored boards near fine. In clean and bright yellow dust jacket printed in blue and orange but with several good-sized chips to the front and rear panels. The large map shows points of interest as well as all transportation routes including the names of the steamship and commercial shipping lines associated with each pier. Two sheets of paper stapled together at the center fold 24 panels opens at the center-fold to 24 x 9 inches. Illustrated with water-colors and black-and-white photographs decorative initials the center-fold consists on 1 large color map of the Monterey Peninsula drawn by W. H. Bull; text clean unmarked. Folding brochure of self-wraps with colored drawings; binding square and tight rubbed especially at the folds. Laid in is an invoice from the Hotel del Monte rubber stamped "Paid" and dated January 31 1927 total charge is for $30.00 including room and board charge of $6.00 per night. Very Good. Del Monte now incorporated into the City of Monterey was a resort established by Charles Crocker one of California's Big Four railroad barons. The grounds of the luxury resort hotel were created through the Southern Pacific Railroad's property division Pacific Improvement Company which completed the first hotel on the property in 1880. The Hotel Del Monte included the hotel parkland polo grounds and a golf course as well as the seventeen-mile drive from the hotel to Pebble Beach which was developed as another portion of the resort. This brochure includes a color map illustrated by William H. Bull 1861-1940 a prolific and successful commercial artist. The Southern Pacific Company hired Bull as their first commercial artist and by 1915 he also produced work regularly for Sunset Magazine.
