64721Printed by Kelly & Kelly. London. 1929. Folio. ff. 9. 12 photographs of the hotel and environs 7 illustrations from drawings by BORLASE SMART folding plan. Original printed wrappers with cord tie a very good copy. The Hotel was under the management of the GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY. Robert Borlase Smart 1881 1947 was originally from Devon but made his name as an artist in St Ives. During the First World War he served with the Artists' Rifles Regiment and as a Captain with the Machine Gun Corps. Smart was probably the single-most important figure in St Ives's long history of art. After settling in St Ives after WWI Borlase went on to become a key figure in the town not only as one of the most influential and innovative artists but also as an organiser council member and verbose supporter of the young modern artists whose arrival on the art scene was resisted by many of the traditional artists. As his great friend and fellow St Ives artist Leonard Fuller so aptly said "he was St Ives personified". Printed by Kelly & Kelly. London. [1929]. Folio. unknown

25008Without date or place but docketed in another hand on the reverse including years 1866 and 1867. See Cook’s entry in the Oxford DNB. His temperance hall and hotel illustrated here were built in 1853. The hall was demolished in the 1960s to be replaced by a building typical of those that blight Leicester in 2011; the council gave permission for the hotel to be demolished to make way for another monstrosity. Sepia lithograph printed in landscape on 20 x 13 cm leaf of laid paper extracted from a book or pamphlet. Attractive illustration of an imposing structure with those that flank it and people and coaches in the foreground. Cook’s inscription is written lengthwise and upwards in the right-hand margin. The handwriting is difficult: ‘adopt the scene you have sent / once The I’ll track for post port / Yours very truly / Thos Cook’. Docketed in another hand on the reverse: ‘No 1 / grants. / 2 Bills for 1866 - paid in /67 / 3 Shingleton Bill -’. Without date or place, but docketed in another hand on the reverse, including years 1866 and 1867. unknown
