Fu un giornale di grande successo per le sue satiriche caricature a colori di cui alcune in qudruplo foglio che fu uno dei successi editoriali. I politici, lo Stato Ecclesiastico e la politica europea furono i prediletti ispiratori. Il periodico affrontò una grave crisi nel 1873, quando Grossi decise di abbandonare la redazione per fondare Il Papagallo.
