Second Edition originally published under the slightly different title Famous Recipes of Famous People and issued by the Hotel del Monte without Sunset Magazine in 1936. A compilation of celebrity recipes with the recipes attributed to the famous including: Gertrude Stein John Steinbeck Walt Disney J. Edgar Hoover Rube Goldberg and many others. Also includes a section of recipes of well-known chefs of the day with a bias toward California Hotels and the west in general as well as a short section of recipes from the Hotel Del Monte. The playful illustrations by Sinclair Ross alternately reference Hollywood and the frontier West. Endpapers reproduce the autographs of many of the celebrities featured in the book. Publisher's gilt-decorated cream-colored boards near fine. In clean and bright yellow dust jacket printed in blue and orange but with several good-sized chips to the front and rear panels. The upper pasted endpaper of the third volume contains a note regarding the Hotel and Census Guide and special warning concerning imposters who may be traveling. It also includes contemporary invoices receipts and cheques some of these with interesting letterheads typical for the time around the century; dated 1900 – 1902 all are pasted onto the signature leaves of the register. 18787990Martinsburg W. Va: the hotel; Statesman Print 1878. Bi-fold menu folded on top edge 20.5 x 12 cm. 4 pages. Printed in blue. A four-page program with menu for a banquet honoring Col. Nadenbousch at the Grand Central Hotel in Martinsburg West Virginia. Colonel John Quincy Adams Nadenbousch owned the Hotel in which he was being feted as well as a lumber yard and the Martinsburg branch of the Hannis Distillery based in Philadelphia. He pursued these activities following service in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Prior to the war he had been instrumental in forming the Berkeley Border Militia a pre-Civil War local militia. While the toasts contain a number of shout outs to the nation as a whole and to the period of peace and relative prosperity in which this banquet took place there is also a toast to "The Militia of West Virginia and her Nobel Volunteer Corps. Where duty calls we may be sure to find them." The order of toasts is joined by a list of the officers and VIPs associated with this banquet.
