Tokyo: Imperial Hotel postcards undated; menu dated 1923. Toning and light dusted soiling to menu some mild edgewear. Postcards are warbled and stiff with some spotted soiling.<br/> <br/> Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Imperial Hotel in the Mayan Revival style calling to mind impressions of the ancient Aztec and Mayan Pyramids. The hotel famously withstood several catastrophic earthquakes and the Second World War due in part to its interlocking design until it was finally demolished in 1967. This collection of postcards represent the hotel's interior and exterior at its prime. The menu features incredibly Japanese items like "Roart roast Mallard Duck with Currant Jelly."<br/> <br/> Imperial Hotel unknown

Every other page is advertising which acted as a blotter for the fountain pens in use at the time. Some of those advertising pages have been removed or torn. A previous owner has tipped a page in showing "interesting signatures" he found. I make to claim as to the identity of these people as I am sure some are simply folks with the same names as other more famous people. Still a wonderful piece of Northwest history. Unpaginated pp. 2. 16mo. measuring 4.5" x 6.5". Bi-folded card covers with navy-blue and red lettering with stylized "Menu" to the centre. Comprises of two folded leaves onion-skin paper with menu printed in navy blue. Course offerings comprise a selection of Appetizers Soups Fish Boiled Dishes Entrées Roasts Vegetables Pastry Desserts and Fruits with an offering of Tea or Coffee. A few negligible spots to the lower-left margin of the front cover spine reinforced with tape contents remarkably well-preserved and without blemish; very good. Unrecorded in OCLC. Not found in Peel BAC/LAC University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections the Manitoba Legislative Library et al. Rare and charming pre-war Manitobiana. <br/><br/>¶ The delightful and rare surviving menu from the inaugural meal served on Christmas Day at the historic Royal Hotel located at 207 First Avenue Binscarth Municipality of Russell-Binscarth. Construction of the hotel began in 1904 for the hotelier Robert Murdock 1852-1919 to replace an earlier wood-frame building. Originally a three-storey structure the first floor comprised of an office dining room and bar room. On the second floor were twelve bedrooms a parlour and smoking room. Archer St. in the heart of Tulsa's historic Greenwood neighborhood the establishment of an upscale hotel for Black travelers and road trippers marked a turning point in the reconstruction of the neighborhood. Just a generation earlier Greenwood nicknamed Black Wall Street for its thriving Black businesses and citizenry had been decimated by white supremacists businesses and homes razed to the ground and as many as 300 citizens murdered. At its height the hotel run by owner-manager W.H. Small boasted 77 rooms 50 of them "with connecting bath / Fans and telephones in all rooms." Date of business card based on the "Negro Motorist Green Book" for 1940 which lists the hotel on p. 39. <br /> <br /> The address 615 E. Archer Street today stands on the corner across from the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center which commemorates the neighborhood's history and legacy. unknown
