1972H32958New York & Pittsburgh 1972. Very good. From the collection of philosophy professor Ed Gelblum whose teacher and dissertation adviser for his doctoral thesis was Aron Gurwitsch. Gelblum had yet to complete his doctoral dissertation when he was hired by Duquesne to teach in their philosophy department. There are seven letters from Gurwitsch six of which are typed and a single page each with the earliest from July 19 1968 also being the longest: 4 closely handwritten pages. Accompanying these are approximately 30 pp. of Gelblum's letters to his old teacher first on his dissertation which was on Aristotle Husserl and the Greek concept of "historia" Gurwitsch urged Gelblum more than once to focus narrow his survey and also gave other sage advice on how to manage the process of dissertation writing -- good advice since Gelblum tended toward verbosity; Gelblum also gives some account of Steve Levine a fellow philosophy teacher at Duquesne and New School alumn who Gurwitsch also taught: Levine got caught up in 60s activism and was heavily involved in the SDS; he ended up resigning from Duquesne in acrimonious circumstances that saw him and his wife banned from the campus -- Gelblum is emotionally caught up in this torn between the loyalty of his friendship to Levine and his wish to be on good terms with Duquesne which granted him tenure despite his dissertation still not being finished in 1972 -- ah those were the days!. Gurwitsch wrote on the relations between phenomenology and Gestalt psychology and in the problems of the organization of consciousness. In particular he distinguished between the theme the thematic context and the margin. This is the core of his theory of the Field of Consciousness. He also has his own theory of the noema the horizon and the transcendental ego. Gurwitsch was an important influence for Merleau-Ponty. He taught at Brandeis University in the mid-1950s. He taught at The New School For Social Research's Graduate Faculty of Social and Political Science from 1959 to 1973. Also included is a 24 pp. essay on Descartes by Gelblum for a lecture course Gurwitsch taught in the fall of 1966 plus over 60 pp. of Gelblum's handwritten notes on Gurwitsch's Descartes lectures 1966-67. We are assuming the typescript is by Gelblum; it doesn't have the elegance and flow we associate with Gurwitsch and feels more like student work but it might be an early draft of one of his lectures -- there is that faint possibility. Very good with some tanning and wear. Thrown in is a June 1966 copy of The Review of Metaphysics with an article by Gurwitsch on Husserl with Gelblum's marks and notes. unknown
