This volume contains some 12000 handwritten cards photo-mechanically reproduced. These cards were prepared over a long period of time by the late Professor Aron Freimann who died before he was able to complete his work and to see it through the press. Freimann's intention was to provide scholars with a complete list of all known manuscripts written in Hebrew characters. The entries on the cards usually include the following information: 1. Hebrew title 2. Author in German or in English transliteration 3. Subject in German or in English 4. Location generally indicated by symbols 5. Bibliography The book is arranged by titles and notes the known locations of the manuscripts. Freimann's catalog is based almost solely on secondary material catalogs and other printed sources. Many of the sources he used were compiled over a century ago and never revised. The catalog is incomplete and the locations of some of the manuscripts are no longer valid. Its references to secondary literature about the manuscript or author however are valuable to the bibliographer and researcher. Therefore it remains an important bibliographical resource. Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5431 First edition.The fourth international master chess tournament to be held in the spa resort of Karlsbad Czechoslovakia in 1929 was a round robin event involving 22 of the best chess masters in the world. Of the top players only world champion Alexander Alekhine and former world champion Emanuel Lasker were missing. The line up of players included such names as Jose Capablanca Efim Bogoljubov Frank Marshall Akiba Rubinstein Milan Vidmar Aron Nimzowitsch and Rudolf Spielmann. Among the remaining invitations one notable participant was Vera Menchik the women's world champion who joined despite the protests of some male colleagues including fellow participant Albert Becker. The tournament was held in the Kurhaus Imperial Hotel from July 30 to August 28. The time control used was 30 moves in two hours followed by 15 moves in one hour.With 3 rounds to go Capablanca 13 and Spielmann 13 led Nimzowitsch 12 1/2 and Rubinstein 11 1/2. Rubenstein beat Menchik Capablanca only drew with Vidmar while Nimzowitsch won a crucial game from Spielmann. Thus with 2 rounds to go it was Capablanca 13 1/2 Nimzowitsch 13 1/2. Spielmann had led through most of the tournament and could not bear to see the first prize slip away at the end. He concentrated all his remaining energy and beat Capablanca. Nimzowitsch only drew with Maroczy and Rubinstein drew with Becker. With 1 round to go it was Spielmann 14 Nimzowitsch 14 Capablanca 13 1/2 and Rubinstein 13. Spielmann now had the best chance because he faced Mattison while Nimzowitscvh had to play the more dangerous Tatakower Rubinstein drew with Euwe. Capablanca crushed Marcozy while both Spielmann and Nimzowitsch obtained winning positions. Tratakower began to fight hard and was unclear whether he could hold the draw. Spielmann was quite nervous and started exchanging pieces prematurely instead of simply winning a pawn. Spielmann only drew falling back into a tie with Capablanca. Nimzowitsch struggled on and finally won his game and the tournament. The time limit was 30 moves in two hours and then 15 moves per hour. Divinksy: 39 John C Owen translated and helped produce the work Budapest 1896 International Chess Tournament published by Caissa Editions and has written a number of articles on chess.Condition: Signed by the author on front end paper. Aron Nimzowitsch was a Latvian-born Danish chess player and writer. In the late 1920s Nimzowitsch was one of the best chess players in the world. He was the foremost figure amongst the hypermoderns and wrote a very influential book on chess theory: My System 1925–1927. Nimzowitsch's seminal work Chess Praxis originally published in German in 1929. The height of Nimzowitsch's career was the late 1920s and early 1930s. Chessmetrics places him as the third best player in the world from 1927 to 1931 behind Alexander Alekhine and José Capablanca. His most notable successes were first-place finishes at Copenhagen 1923 Marienbad 1925 Dresden 1926 Hanover 1926 the Carlsbad 1929 chess tournament and second place behind Alekhine at the San Remo 1930 chess tournament. Nimzowitsch never developed a knack for match play though; his best match success was a draw with Alekhine but the match consisted of only two games and took place in 1914 thirteen years before Alekhine became world champion.Nimzowitsch is considered one of the most important players and writers in chess history. His works influenced numerous other players including Savielly Tartakower Milan Vidmar Richard Réti Akiba Rubinstein Mikhail Botvinnik Bent Larsen Viktor Korchnoi and Tigran Petrosian and his influence is still felt today. He wrote three books on chess strategy: Mein System My System 1925; Die Praxis meines Systems The Practice of My System 1929 commonly known as Chess Praxis; and Die Blockade The Blockade 1925 although much in this book is generally held to be a rehash of material already presented in Mein System. Mein System is considered to be one of the most influential chess books of all time. It sets out Nimzowitsch's most important ideas while his second most influential work Chess Praxis elaborates upon these ideas adds a few new ones and has immense value as a stimulating collection of Nimzowitsch's own games accompanied by his idiosyncratic hyperbolic commentary which is often as entertaining as instructive.Condition: Signed by the author on the frontispiece. This set provides a stunning full reproduction of the beautiful and notable late medieval illuminated manuscript Haggadah held at the State Library of Darmstadt along with critical text discussing the work. Originally produced by the scribe Israel Ben Meir of Heidelberg in conjunction with an unidentified artist this fascinating Passover Haggadah has been noted for its unique illustrations. Scholars have remarked on its inclusion of egalitarian images of men and women and have noted that it visually seems to have more in common with non-Jewish works from the period. The last two leaves of the manuscript are not connected with the Passover text but instead depict a hunting scene and the Fountain of Youth. All though the scholarly text of this edition written by German Rabbi Bruno Italiener 1881-1951 along with German art historian August L. Mayer 1885-1944 historian Aron Freimann 1871-1948 and Adolf Schmidt dates the manuscript to the 14th century superseding scholarship has now ruled out that possibility for stylistic reasons. The manuscript is now believed to have been produced sometime around 1430. Vol.1 text: Octavo. xi 1 313 1pp. 16 plates. Pebbled leather over decorative paper boards with gilt ruling tooling and lettering on the spine. Top edge in gilt. Frontispiece b/w photographic reproduction of the binding of the original manuscript. German and Hebrew text throughout critically discusses the Haggadah manuscript and analyses a number of other related manuscripts from the period. The final leaves contain 16 plates of high quality b/w photogravure reproducing pages of various manuscripts mentioned in the text. Vol. 2 "tafelband" facsimile volume: Folio. 58 double-sided leaves. Pebbled leather over decorative paper boards with gilt ruling tooling and lettering on the spine. Top edge in gilt. This volume gorgeously reproduces in full the content of the illuminated manuscript Haggadah. The reproduction utilizes what was at the time state of the art full color photography highlighted with lustrous gilt overprinting. The visual reproduction is surprising in its faithful accurate and vibrant reproduction of the leaves text and imagery. The resulting facsimile is successfully able to replicate the look and feel as well as the physical aspects of the interior of the original manuscript. Text volume with very minor rubbing to extremities of the binding and some minor foxing to the bottom and foredges of the book block. Interior with minor sporadic foxing to the pages usually confined to the margins. Facsimile volume with some very minor rubbing to the extremities of the binding. Interior clean and vibrant. Book blocks tight. Bindings in very good to near fine interiors in very good to near fine condition overall.
