Annotations by A Nimzowtisch R Spielmann A Becker S G Tartakower A Brinckmann and round by round analysis and introduction by H Kmoch. Signed by Aron Nimzovitch. Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5431 First edition.

The fourth international master chess tournament to be held in the spa resort of Karlsbad Czechoslovakia in 1929 was a round robin event involving 22 of the best chess masters in the world. Of the top players only world champion Alexander Alekhine and former world champion Emanuel Lasker were missing. The line up of players included such names as Jose Capablanca Efim Bogoljubov Frank Marshall Akiba Rubinstein Milan Vidmar Aron Nimzowitsch and Rudolf Spielmann. Among the remaining invitations one notable participant was Vera Menchik the women's world champion who joined despite the protests of some male colleagues including fellow participant Albert Becker. The tournament was held in the Kurhaus Imperial Hotel from July 30 to August 28. The time control used was 30 moves in two hours followed by 15 moves in one hour.

With 3 rounds to go Capablanca 13 and Spielmann 13 led Nimzowitsch 12 1/2 and Rubinstein 11 1/2. Rubenstein beat Menchik Capablanca only drew with Vidmar while Nimzowitsch won a crucial game from Spielmann. Thus with 2 rounds to go it was Capablanca 13 1/2 Nimzowitsch 13 1/2. Spielmann had led through most of the tournament and could not bear to see the first prize slip away at the end. He concentrated all his remaining energy and beat Capablanca. Nimzowitsch only drew with Maroczy and Rubinstein drew with Becker. With 1 round to go it was Spielmann 14 Nimzowitsch 14 Capablanca 13 1/2 and Rubinstein 13. Spielmann now had the best chance because he faced Mattison while Nimzowitscvh had to play the more dangerous Tatakower Rubinstein drew with Euwe. Capablanca crushed Marcozy while both Spielmann and Nimzowitsch obtained winning positions. Tratakower began to fight hard and was unclear whether he could hold the draw. Spielmann was quite nervous and started exchanging pieces prematurely instead of simply winning a pawn. Spielmann only drew falling back into a tie with Capablanca. Nimzowitsch struggled on and finally won his game and the tournament. The time limit was 30 moves in two hours and then 15 moves per hour. Divinksy: 39 John C Owen translated and helped produce the work Budapest 1896 International Chess Tournament published by Caissa Editions and has written a number of articles on chess.

Condition: Signed by the author on front end paper. 197339864New York: American Academy for Jewish Research 1973. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. The "Union Catalog of Hebrew Manuscripts and Their Location" is comprised of two volumes:

- Volume One: Index 1973. Folio. XXXIV 280pp. Original full green cloth with gold lettering to spine. Index by Menahem Hayyim Schmelzer; Introduction by Salo Wittmayer Baron and "Aron Freimann: A Personal Tribute" by Shelomo Dov Goiten. This volume includes a list of frequently used abbreviations; a list of locations owners of manuscripts catalogs and their symbols; and an authoritative index in Roman characters.

- Volume Two 1964. Folio. 4pp Title and Preface 462pp. Original full green cloth with silver lettering to spine. Preface by Saul Lieberman. This volume contains some 12000 handwritten cards photo-mechanically reproduced. These cards were prepared over a long period of time by the late Professor Aron Freimann who died before he was able to complete his work and to see it through the press. Freimann's intention was to provide scholars with a complete list of all known manuscripts written in Hebrew characters. The entries on the cards usually include the following information:

1. Hebrew title
2. Author in German or in English transliteration
3. Subject in German or in English
4. Location generally indicated by symbols
5. Bibliography

The book is arranged by titles and notes the known locations of the manuscripts. Freimann's catalog is based almost solely on secondary material catalogs and other printed sources. Many of the sources he used were compiled over a century ago and never revised. The catalog is incomplete and the locations of some of the manuscripts are no longer valid. Its references to secondary literature about the manuscript or author however are valuable to the bibliographer and researcher. Therefore it remains an important bibliographical resource.

Very minor shelf wear. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. American Academy for Jewish Research hardcover

1930851New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1930. First American edition. Fine/Very Good . A lovely copy of Svevo's best work a novel that is widely regarded as the "great modern Italian novel." Book Fine with a touch of mottling to the cloth on the rear board otherwise clean fresh and unread. In a Very Good price-clipped dust jacket with small chips at the spine ends and one corner otherwise in a quite attractive state.

Self-published in 1923 the novel was largely ignored until championed by James Joyce who had known Svevo and his writing for over 15 years. In fact Svevo is credited as the inspiration for Joyce's immortal Leopold Bloom character in Ulysses. A charming riotous work of psychological realism in which Svevo's neurotic character writes his memoirs on the advice of his shrink. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Alfred A. Knopf unknown books

Bruce Reedy Author photograph. xxiii 1934 2 pages. Footnotes. Map. Illustrations. Brief Chronology. Glossary. Notes. Bibliography. Index. In English with some Russian text. Author dated inscription in Russian on the fep. Inscription translates as To Dear Barbara with great respect and gratitude for her surprising patience. Leon April 13 2000. Excerpted from the American Enterprise Institute website: "Leon Aron is Resident Scholar and Director of Russian Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. He is the author of three books and over 300 articles and essays. He is the author of the first full-scale scholarly biography of Boris Yeltsin Yeltsin: A Revolutionary Life; Russia s Revolution: Essays 1989-2006; and most recently Roads to the Temple: Memory Truth Ideas and Ideals in the Making of the Russian Revolution 1987-1991. Dr. Aron earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University has contributed an opening chapter to The New Russian Foreign Policy Council on Foreign Relations 1998 the first detailed and systematic account of the intellectual and moral revolution that precipitated the Soviet collapse. Dr. Aron has contributed numerous essays and articles to newspapers and magazines. From 2014 to 2020 Dr. Aron was a governor of the Broadcasting Board of Governors which oversees the operations of several international broadcasting outlets including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. From 1990 to 2004 he was a panelist on Looking from America Gliadya iz Ameriki a weekly Voice of America Russian-language radio and television show. Dr. Aron has taught at Georgetown University. Derived from a Kirkus review: If Russia in Churchill's words is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma this splendid biography by Aron does much to unwrap the mystery of one of Russia's most enigmatic statesmen. Opinion in the West about Yeltsin has veered from incomprehension through idolatry almost to contempt. While showing Yeltsin's conspicuous faults it is Aron's great virtue to reveal his even more impressive virtues: Even as an apparatchik Yeltsin showed an enormous capacity for work was demanding incorruptible and almost disdainful of the privileges to which he was entitled. But his supreme virtue has been his courage: his unprecedented criticism of the corruption of the old guard at the 70th Party Conference in 1987; his steadfast refusal to bow to attempts to discipline him; the memorable moment when with Gorbachev in detention he rallied the democratic forces by his speech from a tank; the economic revolution which in the teeth of diehard opposition he brought to Russia; and perhaps most remarkable of all his insistence—in the face of plummeting polls pessimistic advisers and his own illness—on holding democratic elections as scheduled in 1996 ultimately winning against all odds. In between there were some inglorious moments: the brutal and incompetent war in Chechnya; the periods of passivity depression and apathy; and the times when a corrupt group "under the pseudonym Yeltsin" seemed to run the country. But for all these failings Yeltsin has provided in the most tolerant and the least aggressive regime in Russian history "the irreducible tripartite core of a modern democracy": a free press free opposition and free elections. In richness of information analysis and judgment Aron illuminates not only a great man but a supremely critical period of Russian history.
