Chip to the top corner of spine on volume 7 else the set is very good. Meir Aron Goldschmidt 1819 – 1887 was a Danish publisher journalist and novelist. He was the notorious founding editor of the political magazine Corsaren a Danish satirical paper that lampooned everyone of notable standing. Corsaren played an pivotal role in the life of Søren Kierkegaard to the point that Kierkegaard could divide his life into a before and after "the Corsair Affair". Graduating with a degree in philology in 1836 Goldschmidt's meeting with classical Greek culture changed much of his attitude and made him try to balance between Jewish and non-Jewish thoughts. Especially the Greek idea of Nemesis impressed him and imbued much of his later works and the polarizing polemical of literary and cultural Denmark of his time. Volume 2 of his "Life Memories and Achievements" is a historical and philological saunter through time with Nemesis the goddess of personified retribution for the sin of hubris. 440927Taylor & Francis. Paperback. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. Routledge 2019 paperbackGood conditionThis is the first part of Raymond Aron's landmark two-volume study of the sociological tradition-arguably the definitive work of its kind. More than a work of reconstruction Aron's study is at its deepest level an engagement with the very question of modernity: how did the intellectual currents which emerged in the eighteenth century shape the modern political and philosophical order With scrupulous fairness Aron examines the thoughts and arguments of the major social thinkers to discern how they answered this question. Volume One explores three traditions: the French liberal school of political sociology represented by Montesquieu and Tocqueville; the Comtean tradition anticipating Durkheim in its elevation of social unity and consensus; and the Marxists who posited the struggle between classes and placed their faith in historical necessity. In his customary clear and penetrating prose Aron argues that each of these schools offers its own theory of the diversity of societies and that each is inspired both by moral convictions and by scientific hypotheses. This Routledge Classics edition includes an introduction by Daniel J. Mahoney and Brian C. Anderson. Taylor & Francis paperback
