«L'anno 1848 il giorno 26 del mese di maggio, nel Comune di San Giorgio, ad un'ora di notte... siamo stati avvertiti dal clamore pubblico essere stati in quest'abitato scoperti tre forestieri portatori di sostanze venefiche e che abbiano dati indizi di volerne far uso a danno della popolazione, la quale, insorta contro di loro li ha spenti». Così inizia il rapporto del «supplente giudiziario» Nicola Masci su un agghiacciante episodio di quella plurisecolare «strategia del colera» che seminò il terrore anche in Calabria. Ma i tre poveri venditori ambulanti di pettini erano davvero degli untori? E chi mise in giro quella «voce», con quali effettivi propositi? «Il sospetto e l'esasperazione, quando non sian frenati dalla ragione e dalla carità, hanno la trista virtù di far prendere per colpevoli degli sventurati, sui più vani indizi e sulle più avventate affermazioni», aveva ammonito Manzoni. Ma gli atti giudiziari di questa «storia» sconosciuta confermano altri sospetti e sollecitano altre riflessioni. L'eccidio fu infatti un episodio di una lunga «strategia della tensione», i cui veri colpevoli furono condannati solo dieci anni dopo, in un processo che solo in parte svelò i misteri di un'istruttoria che volutamente aveva cercato di insabbiare la verità. Un episodio che in questa sottile e densa ricostruzione narrativa si rivela come «un'eloquente storia d'oggi». Autori: Paolo De Luca.

Capilettera istoriati, malnumerazione dalla carta 129 alla 132, vi è una ripetizione numerica. Conclude l’opera gli 11 capitoli del “De putredine scribendi occasio, & propositum” di Marcus Oddi, figlio di Oddo Oddi. Pergamena floscia coeva con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Prima edizione. Bell’esemplare che presenta lievi aloni saltuari. Presente tracce di tarlo restaurate. Tracce d’uso alla pergamena, esigue tracce di legacci. Manca a Vicaire; Durling, 3385; Adams, II, O-51. Presenti 11 esemplare nell’ICCU.

Una grande lapide nella Chiesa dell'Ascensione, nel quartiere Chiaia e una stradina, via Conte di Mola che, penetrando i Quartieri Spagnoli, si arrampica, a pochi passi da via Toledo, lambendo l'antico palazzo Vaaz diventato Berio, verso la collina dominata da Castel Sant'Elmo. Sono le uniche tracce dei quaranta e più anni vissuti a Napoli, sua patria d'adozione, da Miguel Vaaz de Andrade, per storici antichi e moderni, uno dei più grandi mercanti di grano europei, attivo fino al 1623, anno della sua morte. Vaaz è ricordato dagli storici oltre che per la sua spregiudicata intraprendenza e astuzia, per aver salvato Napoli dalla terribile carestia conseguente alla pestilenza con il grano fatto arrivare dai paesi balcanici. La lapide posta nel 1698 ricorda che nel 1617, nel giorno della festa dell'Ascensione, vide san Pietro dei Celestini nell'atto di proteggerlo e, per disperdere l'impeto dell'avversa fortuna, prese dimora in questa Chiesa. Gli agenti del viceré duca d'Ossuna non riuscirono a catturare il mercante accusato di aver a lungo frodato il Regno. Vaaz si rifugiò nella chiesa iniziando una lunga latitanza che interruppe solo quando, circa due anni dopo, fu assolto al termine di un lungo processo. Fondatore del Casale S. Michele in Terra di Bari, agli inizi del 1600, Vaaz è sempre stato nella memoria dell’autore, nativo del luogo inventato da Don Miguel intorno a una torre cinquecentesca. E, nel teatro, ha militato per un quarto di secolo nella fucina del “Sannazaro” scrivendo per Nino Taranto, Luisa Conte, Ugo d’Alessio, Pietro de Vico e tutti gli altri artefici dello straordinario successo del teatro di via Chiaia. Ha pubblicato, oltre ad alcuni libri di sport, “Tempo di maggio”, storia del teatro popolare napoletano del ’900”; la biografia di Aniello Califano, il poeta di “’O surdato ’nnammurato” e “Bar Maria - Storia della cafettera che inventò il mitico bar-università di Forio d’Ischia”. Ha firmato anche molte regie per Mario Merola, Roberto Murolo, Sergio Bruni, Beniamino e Rosalia Maggio. Il suo “Tempo di Maggio, storia del teatro popolare del ’900 a Napoli” è da vent'anni adottato nelle Università nelle facoltà di lettere moderne. Nel cinema è autore del soggetto e della sceneggiatura del film “Quel ragazzo della curva B” (aprile 1987) che, per una fortunata scommessa, si conclude con il Napoli in festa per il suo primo scudetto.

Si diffuse con una velocità impressionante e uccise circa un terzo dell'intera popolazione europea. Fino a tutto il Seicento, l'Europa ha dovuto convivere con ondate pressoché regolari di epidemia; la popolazione europea ha impiegato quattro secoli a tornare ai livelli precedenti il 1350. Questo volume sintetizza in una narrazione densa di fatti la storia della «morte nera» e del suo impatto sull'Europa; dopo aver richiamato le maggiori epidemie del mondo antico e medievale, gli autori raccontano lo scoppio della peste del Trecento, i tentativi di comprenderne le cause e di arginarla, gli effetti delle ricorrenti epidemie e i due ultimi maggiori episodi, la famosa Grande Peste di Londra del 1665 e quella di Marsiglia del 1720.
