2016221618New York: Aperture 2016. Rilegato sovracoperta hard cover dust jacket. Perfetto Mint. Twenty-five Years of Photographs. A Chronological Album. Un saggio di David Company. Testo di Katya Tylevich. 300 fotografie a colori e in bianco e nero di Todd Hido. Cm 30x 255. pp. 272. Perfetto Mint. Prima edizione First Edition.
Aperture, hardcover

1963253457New York 1963. unbound. All three of these one-page letters were written in New York City in 1963 to Italian-born left-wing political activist and publisher Carl Aldo Marzani concerning a prospective book Marzani was attempting to finalize. The first letter measures 11 x 8.5 inches and is dated January 7 1963 in small part: "I write with regret to say that all my friends agree that I better not write an introduction for your book. I am sorry that I have to consider the question whether my contributing would do more to hurt my general usefulness in this field. Roger Baldwin who was one of those with whom I discussed the matter made an interesting suggestion; namely that you try to get some person so far outside the general radical area that he would not have to consider the problem as I have to consider it.I hope you won't mind my saying in conclusion that there is a real trouble in the fact that communism in power goes so far beyond what is done here in the denial of freedom. Incidentally communism not in power has tried hard to keep me from speaking on various occasions." The second letter measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches and is dated January 8 1963 in part: ".Yes I am perfectly willing to be quoted as saying your book is 'original entertaining and effective' on the flap of the jacket.I hope you and Deutscher's opinion are right about what Russia will become. I am right in holding that we who hold civil liberties cannot have a double standard on judgment." The third letter measures 11 x 8.5 inches and is dated February 11 1963 in part: ".I am glad you are making progress with your book. Objectively I expect that there will be among the 'emerging' nations.a great deal of the sort of thing exemplified by Nkrumah but I would be entirely untrue to my deepest sense of values if I didn't protest it and I do not believe evolution out of this autocratic dictatorship will be fast except as it is protested.I by no means put what Nkrumah does in Africa on all fours with what Stalin did in Russia in the name of socialism." The recipient of these letters Carl Aldo Marzani 1912 - 1994 was a Communist Party organizer volunteer soldier in the Lincoln Brigade a member of the OSS and an employee of the U.S. Department of State. He is credited with picking the targets for the Doolittle raid on Tokyo as well as serving three years in Federal prison for having concealed his Communist Party USA CPUSA membership while in the OSS. Several staple holes in the upper left corners of each letter; light staining on the letter dated January 7 1963. 200694112University of Hawaii Press 2006. Hardcover in Dustjacket. AS NEW COPY!. MILITARY GENERAL World War II -First Edition. ix 242 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. #201225 Propaganda Japanese Master propagandists and their craft Defining the limits of society Advertising as propaganda A funny thing happened to me on the way to the front The Japanese propaganda struggle on the Chinese mainland Preparing for defeat. Includes bibliographical references and index. Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945 -- Propaganda Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945 -- Psychological aspects World War 1939-1945 -- Propaganda World War 1939-1945 -- Psychological aspects Japan -- History -- 1926-1945 The Thought War is the first book in English to examine the full extent of Japan's wartime propaganda. Based on a wide range of archival material and sources in Japanese Chinese and English it explores the propaganda programs of the Japanese government from 1931 to 1945 demonstrating the true scope of imperial propaganda and its pervasive influence an influence that is still felt today. Contrary to popular postwar rhetoric it was not emperor worship or military authoritarianism that led an entire nation to war. Rather it was the creation of a powerful image of Japan as the leader of modern Asia and the belief that the Japanese could and would guide Asia to a new glorious period of reform that appealed to imperial subjects. Kushner analyzes the role of the police and military in defining socially acceptable belief and behavior by using their influence to root out malcontents. His research is the first of its kind to treat propaganda as a profession in wartime Japan. He shows that the leadership was not confined to the crude tools of sloganeering and government-sponsored demonstrations but was able instead to appropriate the expertise of the nation's advertising firms to ""sell"" the image of Japan as Asia's leader and modernizer. In his exploration of the propaganda war in popular culture and the entertainment industry Kushner discloses how entertainers sought to bolster their careers by adopting as their own pro-war messages that then filtered down into society and took hold. Japanese propaganda frequently conflicted with Chinese and American visions of empire and Kushner reveals the reactions of these two nations to Japan's efforts and the meaning of their responses. ""A major contribution both to the study of Japan and propaganda in the twentieth century. Barak Kushner meticulously and convincingly reveals the full scope of what was assumed to not have existed; namely an organized multifaceted and disturbingly resilient system of Japanese propaganda. Based on an impressive array of primary sources many only recently uncovered The Thought War provides a fascinating assessment of the complex and often contradictory processes of Japanese propaganda in an imperial context."" --Michael Baskett University of Kansas ""Barak Kushner has written a first-rate study of propaganda in Japan during the Second World War. In a work of painstaking research he takes his readers into the heart of wartime Japan building a compelling argument that Japanese propaganda was sophisticated and effective in rallying the population and after the war seamlessly redirecting it to aid the transformation of Imperial Japan into the post-war democracy of today. The Thought War is a superbly competent piece of research that floods light into a place where only generalization supposition and stereotype had existed before."" --Nicholas J.
