2006171127Cambridge Mass. : MIT Press 2006. First Edition. Hardback. An exceptional copy in the original color printed boards. Particularly and uncommonly well-preserved; tight bright clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new.; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; 324 pages; Description: xvi 324 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. Subjects: Evolution Biology --Mathematical models. Computational biology --Evolutionary computation --Evolution --Models Theoretical. Computational Biology. Series: The Vienna series in theoretical biology. Summary: No biological concept has had greater impact on the way we view ourselves and the world around us than the theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin's masterful contribution was to provide an algorithmic model a formal step-by-step procedure of how adaptation may take place in biological systems. However the simple process of linear incremental improvement that he described is only one algorithmic possibility and certain biological phenomena provide the possibility of implementing alternative processes. In Compositional Evolution Richard Watson uses the tools of computer science and computational biology to show that certain mechanisms of genetic variation such as sex gene transfer and symbiosis allowing the combination of preadapted genetic material enable an evolutionary process compositional evolution that is algorithmically distinct from the Darwinian gradualist framework. After reviewing the gradualist framework of evolution and outlining the analogous principles at work in evolutionary computation Watson describes the compositional mechanisms of evolutionary biology and provides computational models that illustrate his argument. He uses models such as the genetic algorithm as well as novel models to explore different evolutionary scenarios comparing evolution based on spontaneous point mutation sexual recombination and symbiotic encapsulation. He shows that the models of sex and symbiosis are algorithmically distinct from simpler stochastic optimization methods based on gradual processes. Finally Watson discusses the impact of compositional evolution on our understanding of natural evolution and similarly the utility of evolutionary computation methods for problem solving and design. 196832820417
More than 50 items. Good condition organized in plastic sheets in an old red vinyl three-ring binder.

The 1968 Democratic National Convention of 1968 held in Chicago was a landmark event in American political history. John M. Bailey of Connecticut who had helped to orchestrate Johnson's landslide victory in 1964 oversaw the contentious presidential campaign of 1968 in which Robert Kennedy Hubert Humphrey Eugene McCarthy and others sought the Democratic nomination. This collection of papers to and by longtime Democratic National Committee Chairman John M. Bailey includes:

• Eugene McCarthy 3-page telegram requesting an opportunity appear before the Committee to present his argument that "the administration's course in Vietnam is dangerous and wrong."

• Various papers by the McCarthy campaign concerning its goals and requesting information concerning officers seating and other logistical matters at the convention. In the end the party was less than helpful to the McCarthy campaign instead unifying behind Humphrey. These papers help to reveal the struggles of the McCarthy campaign to present its dissenting views.

• Convention press kit containing biographies maps flyers and a poster.

• Correspondence concerning credentials and passes.

• Correspondence and press releases concerning the status of the campaign ranging from state delegates voicing their concerns to a copy of Bailey's memorandum to the White House reporting on developments state-by-state.

• Copies of a letter signed by Kennedy two weeks before his assassination with a note stating that his family agreed to its distribution.

The 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago saw protests and riots outside the convention and a bitterly contested fight inside the convention hall ultimately leading to the nomination of Hubert Humphrey who lost to Nixon in November.
