Colonel Hayashi served on the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff. He graduated from the Japanese Military Academy and their War College. He served in Europe as a Military Attaché prior to WWII. He had several assignments during WWII in Tokyo and at the end of the war was Secretary and Aide to the Minister of War. Dr. Coox was a noted academic and military writer and analyst. In collaborating with Colonel Hayashi on the English-language edition of KOGUN Dr. Coox undertook extensive research which resulted in the inclusion of much more detailed information than was in the original Japanese edition. Volumes have been written about the U. S. Forces and the Pacific War but to date little has been published concerning the Japanese side from the standpoint of high-level command plans and policies. Kogun fills the gap of this long-felt need. Quite original it presents facts and figures never before published in the U. S. This work goes far beyond recounting battles and campaigns. It commences with a sound analysis of the Meiji era background and moves on with authority to treat significant trends and causes as well as results of pre-war Japanese militarism. The author addresses how the army high command estimated the situation throughout the Pacific War on what thinking were its plans of operations founded and how did it actually conduct matters. The narrative reveals episodes of high command errors misestimation of the situation mismanagement in the conduct of operations and internal disagreement on basic policy. This is Ian MacHorton's personal account of his ordeal in the Burmese jungle an inspiring saga of raw stubborn courage in the face of incredible odds. The true story of one man fighting the Japanese hostile terrain disease and physical exhaustion in one of the most extraordinary exploits of World War II. The original 1943 Chindit operation was supposed to be a coordinated plan with the field army43 but the Army's offensive into Burma was canceled. Wingate then persuaded Wavell to let him proceed into Burma anyway arguing the need to disrupt any Japanese attack on Sumprabum as well as to gauge the utility of long-range jungle penetration operations and Wavell eventually gave his consent to Operation Longcloth. Wingate set out from Imphal on 12 February 1943 with the Chindits organized into eight separate columns to cross the Chindwin river. The force met with initial success in putting one of the main railways in Burma out of action then Wingate led them deep into Burma and over the Irrawaddy River. However they found conditions very different from what their intelligence had led them to expect. The area was dry and inhospitable and criss-crossed by motor roads which the Japanese were able to use to good effect particularly by intercepting supply drops to the Chindits. They soon began to suffer severely from exhaustion and shortages of water and food. On 22 March Eastern Army HQ ordered Wingate to withdraw his units back to India. Bantam Books paperback
