Colonel Hayashi served on the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff. He graduated from the Japanese Military Academy and their War College. He served in Europe as a Military Attaché prior to WWII. He had several assignments during WWII in Tokyo and at the end of the war was Secretary and Aide to the Minister of War. Dr. Coox was a noted academic and military writer and analyst. In collaborating with Colonel Hayashi on the English-language edition of KOGUN Dr. Coox undertook extensive research which resulted in the inclusion of much more detailed information than was in the original Japanese edition. Volumes have been written about the U. S. Forces and the Pacific War but to date little has been published concerning the Japanese side from the standpoint of high-level command plans and policies. Kogun fills the gap of this long-felt need. Quite original it presents facts and figures never before published in the U. S. This work goes far beyond recounting battles and campaigns. It commences with a sound analysis of the Meiji era background and moves on with authority to treat significant trends and causes as well as results of pre-war Japanese militarism. The author addresses how the army high command estimated the situation throughout the Pacific War on what thinking were its plans of operations founded and how did it actually conduct matters. The narrative reveals episodes of high command errors misestimation of the situation mismanagement in the conduct of operations and internal disagreement on basic policy.
