1940221598Collaborationist-Controlled China or Japan. Circa1940. Small colour cartoon leaflet. Text in traditional Chinese characters. 10 x 15.5cm. Faint vertical crease though overall in very good condition. An insidiously light-hearted propaganda leaflet presumably distributed by Imperial Japan or Chinese collaborationists amidst the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its intent appears to be to discredit the regime of Chiang Kai-shek by associating him with British and by extension Western imperialism and the century of humiliation. The cartoon portrays an ailing Chinese patient suffering from a swollen Union Jack-emblazoned knee attended by two enthusiastic Japanese medics.

The text at right reads: "把援蔣的綑帶解開來看! 非把這百年大患的惡瘤割掉 中國是不會再站起來的!" roughly translating to "Look! The fetters aiding Chiang must be broken! Unless the malignant tumor of this century-old great affliction is excised China will not be able to stand up again!". . unknown
