The spines of the of the other volumes are sunned but the embossing remains quite legible. Boards of all volumes shown moderate wear with an occasional bump to a corner. Small ink dot at side of page of Volume VII. Volume V bumped at top of spine causing short split at very top of front hinge. All hinges tight. All texts clean. Inscribed to "Mrs. Edmund Bowden from Ellen Doheny" Produced to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Whitman Massacre. The pageant was "a lesson in Americanism designed to teach boys and girls the virtues of their ancestors as well as the thrilling history of the West." As Cassandra Tate pointed out in her history-correcting Unsettled Ground: The Whitman Massacre and Its Shifting Legacy in the American West Penrose gave rise to the Whitman-Saved-Oregon myth using purported martyrdom as a fundraising tool for Whitman College of which he was president.<p>Mrs. Bowden is Angie Elizabeth Burt Bowden 1862-1952 author of Early Schools of Washington Territory and a pioneer herself having lived in Walla Walla from 1866 - 1882.
