194195094New York: Reynal Hitchcock Inc 1941. First limited edition of French adventurer Gontran de Poncins' classic account of his solo unsupported journey in the Canadian Arctic. Octavo bound in three quarters morocco over cloth covered boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine. One on only 550 copies this is number 81. Boldly signed by the author on the front free endpaper "Before I disappear for good!.I remain your friend 'Eskimo Miki' de Poncins." With the original Publisher's Note laid in which explains "The Vicomte Gontran de Poncins author of KABLOONA called out of the Arctic to join the colors of his country disappeared in the debacle of the French Republic following the fall of Paris. It has therefore been impossible to obtain his signature for this limited edition." Poncins did in fact survive and this is one of the scarce copies that he signed. Written in collaboration with Lewis Galantiere Gontran de Poncins' Kabloona recounts the French aristocrat's solo unsupported journey in the Canadian Arctic where he lived with the Inuit for nearly 15 months between 1938 and 1939. Bored with the business world curiosity drew de Poncins to exotic areas throughout the world; his unique technique in relaying his observations of the cultures he discovered was not scientific but provided stylized personal points of view and descriptions. Initially describing the Inuit way of life as primitive and inferior de Poncins soon experienced a deep spiritual awakening after undergoing weeks of hardship in the Arctic and became so well-adapted to the lifestyle he was essentially adopted by the Inuit. Fine/Very Good. illustrations some in color and all by Poncins xi 339p. plus 32 unnumbered pages of black and white photos with captions and some text beneath each photo. Original cloth backed in red leather. Clear plastic acetate jacket and red card slipcase with a title label on the front panel. 22 cm. The jacket has modest damage at base of backstrip and some general wrinkling. The slipcase is sound with modest soiling and wear including a small heart-shaped waterspot on the back panel. The book is fresh and clean and even has the original unfaded and only minimally worn red ribbon marker. Copy No. 90 of the limited edition of 550 copies. The book is an account of Poncins' thoughts and experiences during 15 months in 1938-1939 spent in the Canadian Arctic mostly among Inuit people living near King William Land in what is now known as Nunavut. A printed slip laid in the book explains that the book is not signed because Poncins having ". joined the colors of his country France disappeared in the debacle of the French Republic following the fall of Paris." The slip promised that "in the event of his survival and return to the United States arrangements will be made upon request to his publishers . for him to sign this numbered copy of KABLOONA." In fact Poncins had survived and this copy and an unknown but apparently modest number of other copies of the limited edition were signed by Poncins. The signature on the limitation page is by "Eskimo Mike" de Poncins -- Mike being the name by which he was known among the Inuit. All in all a wonderful copy of an important book about the Canadian Arctic and the Inuit people. Reynal & Hitchcock hardcover

Plan of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Foreword by Simone Veil. Note by Beatrice Prasquier. Historical Notes by Marcello Pezzetti Umberto Gentiloni and Jean Mouttapa. Selected Bibliography. Published in Association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Shlomo Venezia 1923 - 2012 was a Greek-born Italian Jew. He was a survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Venezia was subjected to the typical procedure of the deported to Auschwitz: shave shower the tattooing of the number on the left forearm wearing the interned uniform. At the end of the procedure Venezia was locked up in a separate and isolated section of the camp in quarantine. After quarantine Venezia was assigned to the Sonderkommando in Birkenau made mainly prisoners in good physical condition because of the physical effort that the job required. Venezia was part of the Sonderkommando for six months. A unique participant's account of everyday death and life inside the engine of the Nazi extermination machine. Although most Sonderkommando members too were systematically killed by the SS fate allowed Shlomo Venezia to survive and bear witness. This is a unique eye-witness account of everyday life right at the heart of the Nazi extermination machine. When the Germans invaded the Venezias were deported to Auschwitz. Given the chance to earn a little extra bread he agreed to become a 'Sonderkommando' without realizing what this entailed. He soon found himself a member of the 'special unit' responsible for removing the corpses from the gas chambers and burning their bodies. Dispassionately he details the grim round of daily tasks evokes the terror inspired by the man in charge of the crematoria 'Angel of Death' Otto Moll and recounts the attempts made by some of the prisoners to escape including the revolt of October 1944.
