Sitwell p. 101.<br /> <br /> <p>A landmark botanical work published by subscription with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert heading the list of subscribers. The Rajah of Burdwan reserved one copy as did Cambridge University and the Royal Library of Berlin. The East India Company ordered thirty. The lithographs were executed by the legendary botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch who for decades was the sole draftsman and lithographer used by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Fitch adapted drawings by the botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker and by Indian artists working under the direction of J.F. Cathcart. Hooker had traveled through central and eastern Himalaya from 1847 to 1849 collecting around 7000 species of plants on the journey. His Rhododendrons of the Sikkim-Himalaya 1849–51 began a rhododendron craze among British gardeners and was also illustrated by the skilled hand of Fitch. Hooker was appointed director of Kew Gardens in 1865 and held the post for twenty years. As a close friend of Charles Darwin he had the distinction of being the first audience for Darwin's theory of natural selection. <br /> <br /> <p>The bookplate in this copy is that of Dr. Paul Jay Bowman 1893 - 1985 a charter member of the American Rhododendron Society. Half green morocco and cloth spine lettered in gilt with raised bands marbled endpapers original wrappers bound in at rear<br/> <br/> A magisterial work on one of the most beautiful of all plant families.<br/> <br/> The monograph was instigated by Henry Elwes a gentleman plant-collector traveler and gardener whose interest in botany had been sparked by a visit to the Himalayan region the journey itself was inspired by reading Hooker's Himalayan Journals. In the garden at his home in Colesbourne Gloucestershire he was able to grow many of the members of the Lilium genus and was a recognized expert in the field. However to ensure that the text was as accurate as possible and that the range of lilies was as complete as possible he consulted the greatest botanical experts in the field for help in writing the text. This level of excellence was continued with the illustrations and Elwes was able to carry through his plan to illustrate the monograph with hand-coloured plates by the best available botanical artist with each member of the genus shown full-size. Between March 1877 and May 1880 subscribers received seven parts at a total cost of seven guineas illustrated with 48 plates by W. H. Fitch. Walter Hood Fitch 1817-1892 had his first illustration published in 1834 and throughout most of the remaining part of the nineteenth century produced over 9600 plates for the greatest British botanical publications. Sir Joseph Hooker called him an "incomparable botanical artist" with his "unrivalled skill in seizing the natural character of a plant." DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING WITH EROTIC SCENES SIGNED BY THE ARTIST: With a double fore-edge painting showing bawdy "and athletic" erotic scenes painted by Martin Frost signed with both his initials and containing his handwritten colophon at rear dated 1999. Frost has painted two side-by-side fore-edges giving four vignettes in all: "Four scenes of athletic and ingenious lust" The first side shows a copulating man and woman on either a horse or on a carriage drawn by a horse after Thomas Rowlandson's works. Frost's initials are found on the lower right of this side. The reverse side shows two vertical vignettes depicting coitus on a bike rather an imaginary wheeled chair with parasol note the erect penis statue in the background and a stage scene with a partially nude woman lifting her skirt high to give a view of her genitals and a happy pot-bellied man with a huge erect penis that balances a bowl and 3 goblets he is talented! his costume of the British stage his genitals showing as if being the star of the show. Thomas Hood is known for his humorous poems that appeared in "Punch" although he also wrote more sentimental pieces. PRECOCIOUS PIGGY was originally a story he told to his young son Tom and daughter Frances. After Hood's death Tom recorded the story and illustrated it; the original manuscript is now in the Huntington Library. Hood's daughter Frances Freeling Broderip a children's author rising in popularity at the time of PRECOCIOUS PIGGY'S publication tenderly prefaces the story. 9.25'' x 7''. Seven attractive volumes containing the works of Thomas Hood edited with notes by his son. Chronologically arranged this set contains all the works published by Hood between 1921 and 1845 including his best known poems 'The Song of the Shirt' and 'Bridge of Sighs' as well as his novel Tylney Hall. Whilst Hood was primarily a comic poet who wrote humorously on many contemporary issues he is also prone to reflective and sentimental verse. With a small tear to the front free endpaper of volume I. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Samuel Clement Burchell Jr. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Robert Watchorn. Watchorn was an English-American coal miner and was named secretary of the National Miners' Union in 1888. As well as fighting against abuses of child labour in Pennsylvania factories Watchorn was also appointed US Immigration Commissioner and whilst he was an advocate of immigrant restrictions he criticised commonplace slurs used in the service upon his dismissal. With a binder's stamp to the verso of the front endpaper. Bound by Tout & Sons. Rebound in a contemporary quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally smart. A little rubbing to the front board of volume II with some tiny white marks to the front board of volume V. With some very light rubbing to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine.
