Hood 1799-1845 was an English poet journalist and humorist whose humanitarian verses such as "The Song of the Shirt" 1843 served as models for a whole school of social-protest poets not only in Britain and the United States but in Germany and Russia where he was widely translated. He also is notable as a writer of comic verse having originated several durable forms for that genre. Frontispieces engraved titles and numerous textual illustrations. Six volumes. Octavo. Period three-quarter green morocco over marbled paper bindings with four raised bands decorative gilt stamping and yellow endpapers. Shadow of a bookplate removed from each front flyleaf with the bookplate of Frederick Forrest Peabody to each rear pastedown. Vol 1: xxviii 475; vol 2: vi 496; vol 3: xi 488; vol 4: vi 494; vol 5: xvi 487; vol 6: vi 506 pages. An exhaustive collection of the works of Thomas Hood from his poetry to prose works as well as his writings collected from various magazines. Several volumes with illustrations with illustrated frontispieces present in all volumes. All volumes in GOOD or slightly better condition. Minor soiling to the covers more so to the fore edges. Volumes 4 and 6 with more moderate soiling. Various amounts of darkening with several volumes having heavy darkening to their covers. Minor scuffing to the covers with moderate to heavy scuffing along the extremities. Leather is rather worn along all the book hinges with moderate loss to most volumes and heavy loss of leather along the hinges of volume 3 and 6. All heads are pulled and some are missing minor pieces of leather with a few minor flakes missing from the spines of the volumes. Volume 6 has a 1 inch split in the upper front hinge of the leather. Text blocks bindings and pages are solid with general darkening to the pages very minor sporadic soiling and a few pages with creases. An attractive set in leather in GOOD condition.
