The first six volumes are dated 1862 and the last volume is dated 1863. Thomas Hood was an English poet author and humourist best known for his poems The Bridge of Sighs and The Song of the Shirt. These volumes are edited with notes by Thomas Hood's son. The works within these volumes are organised chronologically and contain some of his best known work. Thomas Hood was a regular contributor to The London Magazine. Punch and Athenaeum. With a frontispiece to volume six. Collated complete. With adverts to the rear of volume one and to the front of volume four. Bound by Leighton Son and Hodge. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart with some fading to the spines and bumping to the head and tail of the spines. Some marks to the boards. Previous owner inscription to the title page of vol. 1. Seven attractive volumes containing the works of Thomas Hood edited with notes by his son. Chronologically arranged this set contains all the works published by Hood between 1921 and 1845 including his best known poems 'The Song of the Shirt' and 'Bridge of Sighs' as well as his novel Tylney Hall. Whilst Hood was primarily a comic poet who wrote humorously on many contemporary issues he is also prone to reflective and sentimental verse. With a small tear to the front free endpaper of volume I. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Samuel Clement Burchell Jr. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Robert Watchorn. Watchorn was an English-American coal miner and was named secretary of the National Miners' Union in 1888. As well as fighting against abuses of child labour in Pennsylvania factories Watchorn was also appointed US Immigration Commissioner and whilst he was an advocate of immigrant restrictions he criticised commonplace slurs used in the service upon his dismissal. With a binder's stamp to the verso of the front endpaper. Bound by Tout & Sons. Rebound in a contemporary quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally smart. A little rubbing to the front board of volume II with some tiny white marks to the front board of volume V. With some very light rubbing to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. The front hinge is starting but firm to volumes V and VI. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout. Near Fine Edward Moxon unknown

B&W frontis' and engravings on half title pgs. Condition is VERY GOOD ; corners edges and ends of spine have moderate wear. Covers are mildly rubbed as are spines.
