Bates b. 1952 is an artist whose work is held in private collections in Canada the United States England Ireland Australia Spain Japan and China. Known as one of Canada’s most accomplished wood engravers Bates has since ventured into book illustration. <br /> <br /> William Morris of Bird & Bull when planning for the book "The Foresters" a poem descriptive of a 1300 mile trek from philadelphia to niagara falls in 1804 had originally intended for Gaylord Schenilac to provide the engravings; however he was so pleased with Bates' work that he obtained permission to print and offer them as an independent set n.b. from Wesley Bates' online CV and Biodiversity Heritage library. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Thirteen complete wood engravings plus engraved title sheet encased in a plain paper wallet; sheets measure 8 1/2" x 11" images range in length from 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" to 7" x 4" including caption/title issued in an edition of 150 copies unnumbered. <br /> <br /> ___CONDITION: Leaves are fine overall clean and without noticeable wear; the versos of plates show very minor offsetting from etching behind which is not visible on rectos minor unintended crease on single plate minor sunning and edgewear on paper wallet. <br /> <br /> ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. <br /> <br /> ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. A spiritual classic that develops the theme of communion with God in this life in preparation for the next.Richard Baxter 1615-1697 "an eminent nonconformist divine. He was unlucky in his education by falling into the hands of ignorant schoolmasters; neither had he the advantage of academical study; but he had the use of an excellent library with which he endeavored to supply the deficiency. Received orders 1638; became minister at Kidderminster 1640. At the Restoration he was appointed one of the kings chaplains and was offered the bishopric of Hereford which he declined. Not being allowed to continue at Kidderminster he settled in London. Although he did not conform he attended the parish churches. His theological system has been called Baxterianism; it holds a middle way between Calvinism and Arminianism. He was a man of great piety zeal and simplicity with a moving and pathetical way of writing. His industry was great having published 168 distinct treatises and few have ever been to better purpose. Dr. Barrow affirmed that his practical writings were never mended and his controversial ones seldom confuted. According to Dr. Bates they contain a treasure of controversial casuistical positive and practical divinity." This photograph was taken on the second Powell expedition.<br/><br/>E.O. Beaman 1837-1876 was a New York landscape photographer who became the official photographer of the U.S. Geological Survey's Powell Expedition summer 1871 upon the recommendation of his supplier E. & H.T. Anthony & Company. Beaman left the survey January 1872 and spent some time photographing the Indians of New Mexico and Arizona before returning East.
