A PRISTINE COPY.<br/> <br/> This is a refined book full of lovely love poetry offered as an object so gorgeous that its Doves Press imprint has to take an uncharacteristic second place in importance; this is especially true because the binding which clearly derives from Doves Bindery models is a convincing perpetuation of that firm's superb achievements. Ever the perfectionist Cobden-Sanderson personally selected and arranged the poems in the present anthology only after much considered effort. He noted in his journal on 31 July 1913: "I have put 'Bright Star' first for I wish the feeling of the last sonnet to accompany the reader throughout; and at the end revert to Keats' first sonnet and so leave the poet as it were on the peak in Darien." Our binding was done by Wesley Baker in 2008 using tools created by Roy Petit responsible for the roses and Stewart Fields who cut the leaf tools. Baker became interested in bookbinding while in college and attended workshops in the Northeast U.S. but is largely self-taught. From Alabama he has adapted the traditional techniques used in England to the climate of the Deep South where high temperatures and humidity require a different method of gold tooling than would be used in London. The present binding represents the latest attempt we know of to carry on in any thoroughgoing and convincing way the great tradition created by Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery at the center of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Overall very good with moderate wear including small tears creases and rubbing; with tape remnants on the inside wraps of issue two. The complete two-issue run of this rare post-WWII British science fiction magazine printed on thin cheap paper. While several authors are credited the content of these magazines were written entirely by N. Wesley Firth. The first issue includes the stories "The Lords of Zorm" "Laughter of the Gods" and "The Timeless Dimension" while the other issue features one full-length tale "Dark Asteroid." Firth's career was sadly cut short when he contracted tuberculosis and died at the age of 29. Scarce. OCLC locates nine copies over two records. Hamilton & Co hardcover

A little age-toning and small chips in a couple of margins final leaf detached but present sound and very good. Long brief by Charles R. Garry. Wesley Robert Wells was an African-American man convicted of minor crimes of theft and imprisoned but because of an altercation with a guard who was unhurt was given the death penalty. The attorney Charles R. Garry worked tirelessly to have the sentence commuted and after 40 years Wells was released from prison little more than a year before he died of a heart attack. Garry who eventually was central to the defense schemes of various Black Panthers referred to Wells as "The First Black Panther." A small leaflet printing an address by John Wesley Dobbs on the "Wings Over Jordan" radio program on the Columbia Broadcasting System on New Year's Day 1939. John Wesley Dobbs an African American activist based in Atlanta worked for thirty-two years as a railway mail clerk and served for almost as long Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons of Georgia. He was a founder in the 1930s and 1940s of organizations promoting Black voter registration in Atlanta. Maynard Jackson the first African-American mayor of Atlanta was his grandson. According to his entry in the New Georgia Encyclopedia Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at his funeral and Thurgood Marshall was a pallbearer. <br /> <br /> In the present address Dobbs celebrates January 1 as Emancipation Day mentioning the same day in 1863 when the Emancipation Proclamation was officially issued by President Lincoln. He details the long history of African Americans in the New World beginning with Alonzo Pietro of the Columbus expedition. He thereafter expounds upon the importance of African Americans in the history of the country with paragraphs focused on assertions such as "We have helped to build America" "We have bled and died for American Democracy" "We have made progress in education" and more. He also speaks about African-American service in the Civil War mentions educators such as Booker T. Washington J.B. Watson and Fletcher Henderson. Ultimately he answers the question "What does the Negro want and deserve" by referencing the four words carved over the Supreme Court: "Equal Justice Under Law." <br /> <br /> OCLC reports just two copies of this rare radio speech at the Bancroft and the University of Georgia. Roads even superhighways have been built into the most parched of the West's deserts and over or through its most formidable mountain barriers but one who would know the Colorado country must still penetrate it as Powell and his men did in 1869 and 1871-72 by taking to boats or resorting to pack trains. Clean internally and very good. <br /> <br /> Early 20th century Seattle imprint a collection of verse bemoaning the slow demise of the logging camp as an institution and with it the profession of lumber jack. <br /> <br /> We find no mention of this publication though a couple newspapers provide some history regarding the publisher. According to The Daily Alaskan Skagway 1910 Col. E. S. Harrison was a prospector in Alaska before entering the newspaper field. He later established the Harrison Publishing Company and moved it to Seattle. The Tacoma Daily Ledger in 1906 states the company was incorporated that year with $75000. <br /> <br /> <br /> We find only a couple of other titles from this publisher in OCLC each held by just 1 or 2 institutions. .
