Wells was an African American inmate in San Quentin prison sentenced to death for throwing a cuspidor at a guard while serving a life sentence. Attorney Charles Garry later known for his work with the Black Panthers filed a suit on his behalf attacking many of the racist policies of the prison system including its segregation policies as failure to provide true rehabilitation. A Limerick edition is tentatively dated the same year and the first London edition followed in 1776. Wesley's prefatory "Advertisement" is dated at Cork 8 May 1775 and refers to requests that the sermon be rendered in print before he left that city requests that he was unable to fulfill due to circumstance.
