Bottom corners bumped contemporary owner's name on the front free endpaper and again on the title page else a nice clean copy with a few pages unopened. Extremely scarce memoir of this Civil War General from Indiana who served as aide-de-camp to McClellan at the start of the war then being elected to Congress and later serving as Judge Advocate General of the US Army. During his time in the Indiana state Legislature and in the US Congress he was a vocal opponent of the expansion of slavery into the west and some of his speeches to that effect are included in this book. This privately printed volume was evidently produced in very small numbers; we count just two holdings in OCLC Indiana State Library App. State. Missed by Broadfoot Nevins etc. Untraced at auction. "Dunn December 12 1814 – July 24 1887 was a US Representative from Indiana from 1859 to 1863 and Brigadier-General Judge Advocate General of the US Army from 1875 to 1881. Dunn studied at Bloomington attended Yale served as aide-de-camp to McClellan at the start of the war and was then elected to Congress. During his time in the Indiana State Legislature and in Congress he was a vocal opponent of the expansion of slavery in the West and some of his anti-slavery speeches are included herein. James Hans Hamilton 1810 – 1863 was an Anglo-Irish Member of Parliament. Hamilton was the son of Hans Hamilton and Anne Mitchell. He matriculated at Christ Church Oxford on 17 June 1828. He was elected to the House of Commons for County Dublin in 1841 a seat he held until 1863. Hamilton married Caroline Trant daughter of John Frederick Trant. He died in June 1863 aged 53. His son Ion succeeded him as Member of Parliament for County Dublin and was elevated to the peerage as Baron HolmPatrick in 1897. A monument to him was erected in Skerries Dublin in 1870. .
