18946<p>Sur la piste d’objets volés et revendus sur le marché des antiquités Egyptiennes, Gaston Maspéro et son équipe parviennent, après plusieurs mois d’enquête, à lever le secret d’une cache recélant un grand nombre de ces reliques. Le 6 juillet 1881, Émile Brugsch, conservateur-adjoint et Ahmed Effendi Kamal pénètrent dans ce qui va être l’une des plus grandes découvertes de l’égyptologie moderne : à leur très grande stupéfaction ils trouvent, dans un désordre indescriptible, les sarcophages des plus grands pharaons d’Égypte : Aménophis Ier, Thoutmosis II, Thoutmosis III, Séti Ier, Ramses II, etc. Pendant cinq jours, aidés de trois cents ouvriers, ils vident entièrement le site et déposent l’ensemble de leurs trésors au musée de Boulaq à Louxor. Cette découverte fut capitale pour la connaissance de l’Égypte pharaonique, d’abord par la très grande quantité d’objets et de richesses qu’elle a dévoilés, ensuite parce qu’elle a permis de reconstituer et de valider de nombreuses hypothèses historiques quant à la chronologie des Pharaons et de leurs filiations. Aujourd’hui encore cette trouvaille, d’une teneur historique exceptionnelle, a inscrit la renommée de Gaston Maspéro au rang des grands égyptologues.
