Publisher's deluxe 3/4 brown morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt spines decorated and lettered in gilt and red marbled endpapers t.e.g. Professional touching up here and there to spine ends some red on the spine vignettes fading occasional light stain or scuff to boards rubbing along joints. A very good set all very clean and bright internally and quite attractive. <br /> <br /> Stunning set the Connoisseur edition of this comprehensive and extensive work on the ancient Egyptian civilization covering history politics religion culture etc. Very richly illustrated with maps of historic sites images of cultural artifacts including weaponry painting pottery diagrams of ancient tombs religious idols and symbols hieroglyphics and early language and more. This set includes the English translation Maspero's work in 9 volumes originally published in French 1895 and Rappoport's 3-volume History of Egypt from 330 BC to the Modern Era. There was a supplemental volume that came out later and which included recent discoveries which is not present here. Illustrated throughout with more than 1200 plates and in-text figures including gravures in double suite 26 hand-colored plates and a hand-colored frontispiece opening each volume. The set comprises the English translation of Maspero's Histoire ancienne des peuples de l'Orient classique first nine volumes Rappoport's three-volume continuation through the Greco-Roman period and the supplemental volume by King and Hall History of Egypt in the Light of Recent Discovery which is not always present. Together the thirteen volumes form one of the most extensive and richly illustrated histories of the ancient Near East produced in the early twentieth century. Handsomely bound in ¾ green Morocco over marbled boards with four raised bands ornate gilt spines decorated with crescent moons and floral motifs gilt lining to boards gilt top edges and uncut edges. It is in Near Fine condition with Morocco spines uniformly faded to brown light wear to the headbands and minor repairs to six volumes Maspero IV and IX Rappoport I-III and King and Hall. There is some toning to margins and a touch of edgewear to endpapers but the text and plates remain very clean throughout. Complete in all volumes and pagination. The Grolier Society unknown

Nine volumes comprise the English translation of Maspero's Histoire ancienne des peuples de l'Orient classique 1895; the remaining volumes by various authors complete the set and are here first published. A leading Egyptologist and archaeologist Maspero 1846-1916 became the director of the Egyptian Antiquities Service in 1881 and was the first director of the Egyptian Museum following its opening in 1902. The Grolier Society issued several limited versions of the edition simultaneously; this set is bound without the limitation leaves. 13 volumes large octavo 232 x 164 mm. Many photogravures and colour plates with tissue guards captioned in red illustrations to text illustrated title pages printed in red and black.
