192739394Rome: NP 1927. Original document. Softcover. vg. Folio 13 x 9". Original b/w photographic portrait of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. The photograph is tipped onto thick cardstock which is inscribed to the then French Minister of Justice Louis Barthou: "A S. S. Louis Barthou con cordiale deferente simpatia. Roma maggio 1927 - V" Mussolini signed To his Excellency Louis Barthou with friendly and respectful sympathy Rome May 1927 - Vth year of the fascist era. The actual photograph is an early official portrait of Benito Mussolini who following the March on Rome in October 1922 became Italy's youngest Prime Minister. The portrait measures 8 1/2 x 6 1/4" and depicts Mussolini dressed in civilian clothes with his head down thus affecting an air of authoritarian severity.

There is a cruel irony behind this exceptional document. Indeed a few years later February 9 1934 Louis Barthou became the French Secretary of State and as such was assigned to welcome King Alexander I of Yugoslavia during his state visit to Marseille on October 9 of the same year. Within minutes of the King's arrival both His Majesty and Barthou were assassinated by Velicko Kerin a Bulgarian revolutionary with a handgun. One of the bullets struck Barthou in the arm passing though and fatally severing an artery. He died of excessive blood loss less than an hour later. The assassination was planned in Rome by Ante Pavelić head of the Croatian Ustaše a fascist movement that Mussolini had funded for years. Cardstock slightly age-toned and partly creased at upper and lower right corners. Inscription in Italian. Cardstock in overall good photograph in fine condition. NP unknown

1945015744no place: No publisher 1945. Photographic Image. Near fine condition. No Binding. Early edition. Two black & white photographs measuring approximately 4.25 inches x 6.25 inches 105mm x 162mm depicting the upside-down hanging corpse of Italian Fascist Dictator Benito Mussolini and others on April 29 1945. A day earlier Mussolini his mistress Clara Claretta Petacci her brother and the dictator's 15 person entourage of ministers and officials of the Italian Social Republic were captured by partisans. They had been traveling with retreating German forces with Mussolini apparently wearing a German military uniform. They were executed in Giulino di Mezzegra by shooting or firing squad and the bodies transported south of Milan and dumped at the old Piazzale Loreto which was renamed Piazza Quindici Martiri. After the corpses were shot kicked and spat upon the bodies were hung upside-down on meathooks from the roof of an Esso gas station. The bodies were then stoned by civilians. The site had previously been used for executions of partisans by Axis authories. One photographs shows a total of 7 hanging corpses identified only by number. Numbers 4 and 5 are Mussolini and his mistress Petacci. Historical records identify number 3 as Achille Starace. A gas pump is clearly visible in the immediate background as is the gas station. It is almost a straight on shot maybe 15 degrees to the right showing 50-60 spectators and a few men facing the crowd apparently acting as security. There are no G.I.'s shown although 4-5 men in leather jackets standing directly in front of the corpses may be aviators. The other photograph is a close-up of Mussolini and his mistress taken about 45 degrees from the left. There is no photographer's identification on the front or back of the prints. Minor staining to the edges. These are original prints from 1945. No publisher hardcover

193218448Milano: Popolo d'Italia 1932. First Edition. Original wraps. Very good. The inscribed first edition of Vita di Arnaldo by Benito Mussolini the biography of his late brother Arnaldo Mussolini. Octavo 124pp 20pp. appendix. Original printed wraps bound along the spine. Text in Italian. Light wear and soiling to wraps text block stable. Includes frontispiece of "Arnaldo" and eight facsimile plates. Inscribed by Benito Mussolini on the title page: "25/12/42 / A Marco / To Us - We will never forget - your friend / Benito." A scarce wartime inscription from the Prime Minister of Italy. Arnaldo Mussolini 1885-1931 was an Italian journalist political organizer and the younger brother and close confidant of Benito Mussolini. Arnaldo became a key figure in fascist propaganda and administration serving as editor-in-chief of Il Popolo d'Italia the regime's principal newspaper where he shaped messaging and helped consolidate support for fascism. Less overtly political than his brother he acted as a mediator within the movement managing party finances cultivating industrial and Catholic backing and maintaining internal discipline. Arnaldo's sudden death in 1931 deprived the regime of an influential behind-the-scenes administrator and adviser during a critical period of consolidation. Popolo d'Italia unknown
