2014010219Kota Kinabalu 2014. Extremely well illustrated small 8vo pp x 251 a very good new copy in dustwrapper. With over 3500 km2 of ultramafic rock outcrops in Sabah 4.6% of the total landmass of the state Malaysia has one of the largest surface expressions of ultramafic rock and one of the most species-rich floras occupying these outcrops in the world. Ultramafic rock occupies < 1% of the land surface of the earth and these outcrops are renowned as centres of high plant diversity supporting high levels of plant endemism. Over 1500 plant species have been documented on ultramafic outcrops around Mount Kinabalu of which a large percentage is endemic to either Mount Kinabalu or Borneo. Sabah is thus recognized as a major locus of floral diversity on ultramafic outcrops but the full plant diversity and ecology remains largely unknown due to a lack of focused research. Biodiversity in many areas of Sabah is severely threatened by land use conversion and because many plant species only occur in a single or a few ultramafic sites impacts on the ecosystems that support them could result in their extinction. 2015010223Kota Kinabalu 2015. Very well illustrated pp x 278 a very good new copy. Malesia is the botanical region comprising Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia Papua New Guinea the Philippines Singapore and Timor Leste. The seed plants of this biologically super-rich region probably include over 41000 species which botanical work seeks to discover and document. The process of getting to understand plant life and planning appropriate strategies for both utilisation and conservation depends in a very fundamental way on first knowing its components and being able to identify plant families genera and species. While the technical expertise for plant taxonomy may be highly specialised the use of spot-characters - features of the plants that may be characteristic for a species alliance or group and which may be constant enough to rely on for identification - can often help. Here the authors have compiled lists of seed plants for as many as 119 spot-characters that they have found useful in their work on identification as an additional tool in our arsenal for tracking down the identities of Malesian seed plants. The characters range from growth form and vegetative characters such as stem and branch characteristics and leaf arrangement as well as a range of features of inflorescences flowers fruits and seeds. This book should be useful for students foresters botanists and anyone who seeks to identify and know the seed plants of Malesia. It emphasises characters that are found on herbarium specimens dried plant material routinely preserved to form the herbariums scientific archive many of which are also easily observable in fresh material but includes a number of commonly noted "field characters" found only in the living plant but which collectors commonly mention in their collecting labels as well. Most of the characters are illustrated by photographs. First Edition. Paperback. New. Paperback

Professor Martin Greenwald was the Chair of the Fusion Energy Science Advisory Committee. This is the panel report of High Energy Density Laboratory Plasmas HEDLP prepared in response to a request from the Department of Energy of March 6 2008. THe panel identified compelling research opportunities in fundamental HEDLP science and identified the scientific issues of implosion physics and target design that need to be addressed to make the case for inertial fusion energy. The panel also provided essential information for an effective stewardship of the Joint HEDLP Program and background for a scientific plan for energy-related HEDLP studies. The Fusion Energy Science Advistory Committee voted unaminously to endorse this comprehensive report. U, S. Department of Energy paperback

This report responded to a letter from the Director Office of Science requesting a review of DOE's Inertial Fusion Energy IFE program to provide an assessment of the present status of the program. A principal conclusion of the report was that 'the quality of IFE science and engineering research is excellent." The panel identified specific contributions that appears especially accessib. e and pointed out the IFE seemed posied to make important contributions to astrophysics. OPERATION BUSHMASTER is a field training exercise FTX conducted at Fort Indiatown Gap Pennsylvania. During this exercise senior USU medical students Graduate Nursing students and international military medical officers are formally evaluated on their medical knowledge and leadership abilities in a simulated resource constrained far forward tactical field setting. Students assume leadership positions in a joint battalion aid station where they are presented with operationally current reality based missions and operational problems for which they must plan and execute while simultaneously managing the medical care of simulated Disease and Non-Battle Injury DNBI patients combat stress casualties and combat trauma casualties. Before "Operation Bushmaster" students go through a two-week military contingency medicine course during which they are presented operational problems and receive pre-deployment training just as they would prior to a real deployment. This classroom phase includes lectures and is focused on team building. The students become a cohesive unit as they prepare to deploy to a fictional country facing challenges from rebel forces. Divided into two groups the students were sent sequentially to spend four days at this large National Guard base nestled in the mountains just north of Hershey Pennsylvania. They were assigned to one of four platoons - all undergoing identical scenarios planning and executing missions while simultaneously caring for a variety of casualties ranging in severity from fatigue to gunshot wounds. The exercise featured nearly 1000 encounters with simulated patients. While patient care is a large part of their training leadership communication skills and logistics are just as important. Students were assigned various roles during the exercise such as patient administrator triage officer medical logistics or litter bearers transporting patients. They frequently rotated positions allowing every student to practice each role. The students also were graded on how well they performed key positions including platoon leader ambulance team leader surgeon and combat stress control officer. They were graded on a number of factors such as communication and leadership skills as they were observed by more than 60 faculty members from Uniformed Services University as well as from across the country.
