Describes the origin, shape, and structure of the ocean floor as well as the development of coastlines and beaches. Carefully explains the complex movements of water masses, first in general terms and then specifically with regard to the various coastal regions of British Columbia. Describes the seasonal variations in salinity and temperature and, in a remarkably lucid manner, the complex interaction of planetary body forces which result in the variability of tides. paperback, 15,5 x 23,5 cm, 160 pagina's. ISBN 9789460040801. In de herfst van 2010 was schrijver Thomas Verbogt Artist in Residence in het Nijmeegse Besiendershuis. Tussen de eerste dag van de oktoberkermis van 2010 en de eerste sneeuw van dat jaar zocht hij naar het Nijmegen uit zijn jeugdjaren. Hij liep door herinneringen aan de stad waar hij lang geleden zo vaak met zijn vader wandelde en kwam als het ware weer thuis in zijn geboortestad, die hij eind jaren zeventig had verlaten. In Herfst in het oosten verzamelt hij een aantal van die herinneringen. Het is een collage van mijmeringen, verhalen en momentopnames. In 1979 verruilde Verbogt Nijmegen voor Arnhem, nauwelijks twintig kilometer verder, maar toch een andere wereld, waar hij zich overigens snel thuisvoelde. Hij bleef er zestien jaar wonen. Ook over die Arnhemse jaren schrijft hij in dit boek. In Herfst in het oosten put Thomas Verbogt zowel uit zijn herinneringen van lang geleden als uit die van gisteren. Leidmotief daarbij is de vraag wat het betekent om je ergens thuis te voelen.
