Het is een boeiende en aangename taak, die ik mij aldus heb opgelegd.' Zo richt de 33-jarige Vlaamse auteur Adriaan De Roover zich op 3 mei 1956 tot het fenomeen Pierre Kemp - de kleurrijke 'man in het zwart', die met zijn ontelbare gedichten sinds het eind van de jaren twintig een unieke bijdrage heeft geleverd aan de Nederlandse poezie van de twintigste eeuw. Uitgerekend in 1956 zal Pierre Kemp zeventig jaar worden en de Constantijn Huygensprijs ontvangen. Drie jaar later volgt de bekroning met de P.C. Hooftprijs. Met De Roovers brief begint een correspondentie, die zal duren tot 15 januari 1962. Het essay is dan nog niet geschreven. Het zal er ook niet komen, althans niet in de beoogde vorm. Intussen is er wel een verzameling brieven, die niet minder dan een goudmijn vormen. De Roover blijkt een liefdevolle, zorgvuldige en inventieve lezer en vraagt de oude dichter de kleren van het lijf. De lectuur van deze correspondentie, die in dit boek integraal wordt uitgegeven, leidt niet alleen tot een dieper inzicht in de zo bijzondere aard van Kemps dichterschap, maar is ook een ontroerende ervaring. Als een bezetene, maar dan veel lieflijker laat een dichter zien 'die zich schamper en sans gene bloot geeft en op onthutsende wijze zijn aftakeling poetisch observeert. Een dichter die in ontelbare verzen steeds opnieuw vaarwel zegt aan de vele kleine dingen die zijn leven kleur en klank gaven. De wijze waarop hij droom en werkelijkheid in het perspectief van een onvermijdelijke dood plaatst, maken van de oud geworden Kemp een van de oorspronkelijkste en belangrijkste dichters van de Nederlandse poezie.'
