Within a few generations addressing antiquity from a non-Christian viewpoint would have been unthinkable. From his place on the edge of this shifting paradigm Lydus' writings help us to see the emergence of medieval Byzantium through Roman eyes. . 0415060214 . Routledge hardcover

201212012Franz Steiner Verlag. 2012. Softcover. Fine. English summary: The differentiation between Etruscan and Roman sacrificial rituals is one of the fundamental problems in religious historical writing. Christiane Nasse shows that this assumption is based on a misinterpretation of key sources and features prevalent in a century of historical research. The critique leads to deconstruction: either the hypothesis of a dichotomy of extispicy appears plausible or it is sufficiently defined as a "sacred linguistics" on which the research is essentially based. Following up on this question the author investigates the critical sources for ritual slaughter according to historical referentiality on the one hand and textual dissociation on the other. She brings together late-antique commentators on Vergil such as Servius and Macrobius as well as laws from the Codex Theodosianus. Through individual analysis she throws a new light on the poetic representation of classical authors such as Vergil Ovid Lucan Seneca and Silius Italicus which renders essential the use of historical-critical methods on the one side and the basics of narratology on the other. 2009. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Very faint shelfwear. DJ spine sunned.; In Vergil's Aeneid the poet implies that those who have been initiated into mystery cults enjoy a blessed situation both in life and after death. This collection of essays brings new insight to the study of mystic cults in the ancient world particularly those that flourished in Magna Graecia essentially the area of present-day Southern Italy and Sicily. Implementing a variety of methodologies the contributors to Mystic Cults in Magna Graecia examine an array of features associated with such "mystery religions" that were concerned with individual salvation through initiation and hidden knowledge rather than civic cults directed toward Olympian deities usually associated with Greek religion. Contributors present contemporary theories of ancient religion field reports from recent archaeological work and other frameworks for exploring mystic cults in general and individual deities specifically with observations about cultural interactions throughout. Topics include Dionysos and Orpheus the Goddess Cults Isis in Italy and Roman Mithras explored by an international array of scholars including Giulia Sfameni Gasparro "Aspects of the Cult of Demeter in Magna Graecia" and Alberto Bernabé "Imago Inferorum Orphica". The resulting volume illuminates this often misunderstood range of religious phenomena.; 9.0 X 5.9 X 1.0 inches; 390 pages . 0292719027 . University of Texas Press hardcover

DJ has very minor shelfwear.; The Robson Classical Lectures; 256 pages; Based on Elaine Fantham's 2004 Robson lectures Latin Poets and Italian Gods reconstructs the response of Roman poets in the late republic and Augustan age to the rural cults of central Italy. Study of Roman gods is often limited to the grand equivalents of the Olympian Greek deities such as Jupiter Mars and Juno. However real-life Italians gave a lot of their affection and loyalty to humbler gods with no Greek equivalent: local nymphs who supplied healing waters the great Tiber river and other lesser rivers the lusty garden god Priapus and more. Latin Poets and Italian Gods surveys the representation of these old country gods in poets from Plautus to Statius. Fantham offers historical and epigraphic evidence of worship offered to these colourful lesser spirits and reveals the emotional importance of local Italian deities to the sophisticated poets of the Augustan age.; Signed by Author . 1442640596 . Very faint shelfwear to book else fine.; This book deals specifically with sixteenth-century depictions of the Olympian deities the twelve supreme deities of ancient Greece and Rome. As the Renaissance revived several aspects of antiquity some great works of art represented the Olympians in imitation of the classical style. These deities were rendered as autonomous figures in the form of representation adapted for depicting saints and Christian rulers. This form of depicting the Olympians or the pagan gods was not unanimously accepted by sixteenth-century viewers. The book highlights the problematic framework surrounding the creation display and acceptance of such thought-provoking works of art.; 9.7 X 7.2 X 1.0 inches; 318 pages . 0521815762 . 199244426Oxford University Press. 1992. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Book is fine. DJ has creasing along upper edge of DJ.; In the ancient Greco-Roman world it was common practice to curse or bind an enemy or rival by writing an incantation on a tablet and dedicating it to a god or spirit. These curses or binding spells commonly called defixiones were intended to bring other people under the power and control of those who commissioned them. More than a thousand such texts written between the 5th Century B. C. E. And the 5th Century C. E. have been discovered from North Africa to England and from Syria to Spain. Extending into every aspect of ancient life--athletic and theatrical competitions judicial proceedings love affairs business rivalries and the recovery of stolen property--they shed light on a new dimension of classical study previously inaccessible. Here for the first time these texts have been translated into English with a substantial translator's introduction revealing the cultural social and historical context for the texts.; 296 pages . 0195062264 .
