Else minor shelfwear.; Skrifter Utgivna Av Svenska Institutet I Athen / Acta Instituti Atheniensis Regni Sueciae Series in 4° XXXVIII; 303 pages; The purpose of the Fifth International Symposium at the Swedish Institute at Athens the papers and discussions of which are contained in this volume was to initiate a discussion of the various phenomena characteristic of Greek cult practice of the pre-Hellenistic periods ranging from sacrifice and libations to the handling of cult images and the placing of votive gifts in a sanctuary. It was planned as a cross-discipline symposium so as to allow the problems to be addressed by scholars from diverging points of view by diverse methods and on the basis of the available evidence be it archaeological architectural iconographical literary or epigraphical. We also invited an anthropologist Professor W. Arens of the State University of New York at Stony Brook in order to put Greek cult practice in the more general perspective of cultural anthropology. These efforts notwithstanding it proved impossible to even touch upon all relevant aspects of the topic within the limited time of three days of sessions and a one day field-trip. The result was a concentration of papers and discussions on a few central phenomena such as animal sacrifice votive offerings and ritual meals and a number of single contributions dealing with a wide range of other aspects. It is our hope that the proceedings will inspire further research in this fascinating field. Robin Hägg . 9185086975 . Paul Aströms Förlag paperback

201212012Franz Steiner Verlag. 2012. Softcover. Fine. English summary: The differentiation between Etruscan and Roman sacrificial rituals is one of the fundamental problems in religious historical writing. Christiane Nasse shows that this assumption is based on a misinterpretation of key sources and features prevalent in a century of historical research. The critique leads to deconstruction: either the hypothesis of a dichotomy of extispicy appears plausible or it is sufficiently defined as a "sacred linguistics" on which the research is essentially based. Following up on this question the author investigates the critical sources for ritual slaughter according to historical referentiality on the one hand and textual dissociation on the other. She brings together late-antique commentators on Vergil such as Servius and Macrobius as well as laws from the Codex Theodosianus. Through individual analysis she throws a new light on the poetic representation of classical authors such as Vergil Ovid Lucan Seneca and Silius Italicus which renders essential the use of historical-critical methods on the one side and the basics of narratology on the other. Modern marbled boards with a red morocco title-label lettered in gold on the spine. 4to ca. 18.5 x 24 cm. 2 works in 1 volume. With:2 WITCHCRAFT. Remarques et considerations servans a la justification du curé de Loudun autres que celles contenuës en son factum.France ca. 1634. Two exceedingly rare pamphlets about the "Loudon possessions" a case of mass hysteria surrounding the supposed demonic possession of Ursuline nuns that took place in the western French town of Loudun in 1634. The affair led to the trial of a local priest Urbain Grandier who was accused of witchcraft. Interestingly these two pamphlets are by an anonymous partisan of the accused priest. The possession cases began in 1632 when several nuns at the local Ursuline convent claimed to be possessed by demons. The nuns accused Grandier a charismatic and controversial figure in Loudun of casting spells on them and making them his witches. Grandier who had gained the enmity of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu was arrested and put on trial despite a lack of evidence against him. The trial was riddled with corruption and political intrigue and Grandier was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to death by burning at the stake. His execution took place on 18 August 1634.While 18th century accounts of the famous trial such as those by De La Menardaye were popular contemporary accounts are almost unobtainable. Neither pamphlet has appeared in auction records and there are very few institutional holdings. The spine and corners of the boards are rubbed the title label is slightly chipped. Numbers in the upper corners of the leaves indicate that these two works were likely removed from a sammelband containing multiple works. Internally slightly browned an older typed description has been mounted with tape to the recto of the first free flyleaf.
