Mass market paperback. 160 pp. A few black and white photos throughout. A first person account of the life of Hedy Jo Star one of the first people to undergo gender affirming surgery in the United States. Star performed as a stripper and also served as a female impersonator performing for US troops in World War II. Her career led her to being an influential burlesque performer and sought after costumier. Of somewhat confusing note while the original 1955 edition bears the same title Star did not undergo gender affirming surgery until 1962 and refers to her life with her husband post operation in this book. GOOD condition. Minor fading and scuffing to the covers. A vertical crease present along the front hinge. Some wear to the extremities. Owner's name and address in blue ink on the title page. A brown-tinged print not sepia on 16 x 21 cm matt card with 0.75 cm border. In fair condition very lightly creased and worn. A full length shot of a smiling and clean-shaven Keel in cowboy getup with ponyskin chaps and his cowboy hat in his left hand opening what is clearly a stage-prop wicket gate with backdrop of farm behind him. In Keel's autograph in light blue ink to the left of his torso: 'To Mary / Best of Everything / Sincerely / Harold Keel'. See Image. No date, but for the 1947 London production of Oklahamo. Vintage two-color poster for an unseen performance by punk icons the Stooges queer hippie theatre troupe the Cockettes all-girl rock group The GTOs and John Mendelsohn's short-lived rock band Super Star held at the Hollywood Palladium on July 16 1971. The show would ultimately be canceled after The Stooges formally broke up on July 9 1971.<br /> <br /> A preview of The Cockettes' satirical 1971 film "Tricia's Wedding" was also to have been shown. The film featured The Cockettes reenacting President Nixon's daughter Tricia's wedding to Edward Cox interspersed with a number of humorous scenes including Eartha Kitt spiking the punch bowl with LSD.<br /> <br /> Even before it was canceled it's hard to imagine how this concert would have come together given the clashing styles of the acts. Founded in 1969 in San Francisco the Cockettes were a performance art group that performed improvised musical numbers in elaborate genderbending costumes and had become a sensation among the West Coast arts and culture scene. The GTOs were a satirical rock band formed in Los Angeles with ties to Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa who would produce the band's only album Permanent Damage 1969.
