Pero esta lucha implicaba el cuestionamiento de la concepción del país impuesta por las fuerzas conservadoras; y es aquí donde Alvear padeció una serie de contradicciones derivadas de la insuficiencia de su ideología así como de las raíces de su propia personalidad. Lo que este libro intenta describir en consecuencia no es solamente una etapa de nuestra historia contemporánea sino también el drama de un personaje admirable por muchos motivos pero cuya acción fue condenada al fracaso por las limitaciones que lo neutralizaron.
