One of the most important cultural institutions in Egypt Rare in commerce and institutions this set of 85 issues of the Egyptian magazine al-Hilal from the 1920s-30s is richly illustrated with rotogravures and notable cover art. Alongside contemporary Arabic literature and poetry the journal documents rapid change in Egypt and the wider Arab world driven by science politics and women's emancipation. Founded in 1892 by the Lebanese intellectual Jurji Zaydan 1861-1914 a central figure of the Arab Nahda al-Hilal was conceived as a broad cultural forum. After his death his sons Emil and Shukry expanded participation encouraged public contributions and developed illustration and advertising attracting leading writers of the period including Taha Husayn Khalil Mutran Muhammad Husayn Haykal Salama Musa Mahmud Taymur and Zaki Mubarak with cover art by figures such as D. Hidayet. The issues offer a vivid cross-section of early 20th-century Egyptian life: illustrated reportage on current events travel writing debates on modernization poetry and fiction social commentary historical studies science notes readers' questions puzzles and illustrated advertisements aimed at a growing middle class. Special numbers treat themes such as Art and Beauty November 1935 and the medieval poet Abu l-'Ala' al-Ma'arri June 1938 confirming al-Hilal's role as a major intellectual record of the modern Arab world. 85 issues large octavo. 192982794Indianapolis IN: The Bobs-Merrill Company 1929. First edition first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Jean Hersholt a great artist from the author of this book Lorna Moon". With the bookplate of the Motion Picture Country House tipped-in above the inscription and two MPCH ink stamps to the front pastedown. The author Nora Low grew up in Aberdeenshire but eventually moved to the US and became a Hollywood screenwriter working on a number of hits in the 1920s including Mr. Wu starring Lon Chaney Don't Tell Everything 1921 starring Gloria Swanson and Her Husband's Trademark 1922 with Gloria Swanson and directed by Cecil B. DeMille Love 1927 and Anna Karenina starring Greta Garbo. She also wrote two semi-autobiographical literary works: the short story collection Doorways in Drumorty 1925 and the present novel Dark Star 1929 which was adapted as the film Min and Bill in 1930. Both were based on her childhood in a small inward looking town in Scotland and explore similar themes including "the particular codes and conventions created by such a closed community patterns of surveillance strictures of public morality evidence of private despair. They engage with the margins of this world presenting itinerants outcasts and misfits with a distinct lack of sentimentality. Low's work is also striking in its awareness of the position of women in the community: her stories deal with minutiae with networks of power which operate in apparently insignificant areas" ODNB. Though Hersholt one of the leading Hollywood actors of the early 20th century never appeared in a film written by Low the two may have been acquainted either socially or professionally. The bookplate records that this copy was donated by Hersholt to the Motion Picture Country House a retirement community for Hollywood figures that as president of the Motion Picture Relief Fund he was instrumental in founding in 1940. A lovely copy uncommon in such nice condition with an excellent association. Octavo. Original black cloth white cloth backstrip titles to spine in black and red red top-stain. With dust jacket. A little pale spotting to boards top stain faded. An excellent copy in the jacket with faded spine panel a few minor nicks and a short closed tear to the lower panel. hardcover

Dressler won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Min over fellow nominees Irene Dunne Marlene Dietrich Norma Shearer and Ann Harding. The Dressler-Beery partnership proved so appealing that they were reunited three years later in both Tugboat Annie and Dinner at Eight. Lorna Moon bore a son out of wedlock to director William DeMille with the child being raised by Cecil B. DeMille. After the child was born Moon was in dire straits and her close friends Frances Marion and Mary Pickford helped to get the book published and successfully pushed to have the film made although Moon died soon afterward. The items present include a typed letter Signed by Dr. Montagu stating that he refused to lend Moon any legitimacy by attending the conferences and noting that he had advised the organizer Nobel laureate Prof. Eugene Wigner of the same a typed letter Signed by Nobel laureate Robert S. Mulliken and by several others -- including Amitar Etzioni who later withdrew from the conference -- advising invitees to the Fourth International Conference that there was no religious agenda in question and a typed letter Signed by Moon himself written on the letterhead of the International Cultural Foundation presenting this copy of the 1973 proceedings. Also present are Vol. XXI No. 45 of the Princeton Spectrum newspaper featuring Allen Tate Wood's article "The Dark Side of Sun Myung Moon" a New York Times clipping in which Prof. Kai Nielsen offers reasons why scholars should shun conferences sponsored by Moon and a magazine article listing some of the scientists who chose to attend the fourth annual conference as well as some of those who stayed away. Kept in a meticulous hand identifying members of the shooting parties places and occasional remarks on weather and conditions. There is a separate record of pheasants reared and shot at Gask and Stobhall at end.<br /> <br /> A single page records salmon and grilse taken at a dozen pools on an unidentified stretch of river the Earn near Gask perhaps in seven seasons.<br /> <br /> Signed by Ernest Moon on verso of flyleaf. Item is in very good condition but has not been examined out of shrink wrap. Print has light wear to all edges and the top right corner is missing a small piece of the board behind the canvas. Print measures 14" by 17 1/2" and depicts a rider on horseback in a desert landscape. Karl Moon has signed the print in the lower left corner in black ink. Karl Moon was a painter photographer and illustrator who operated a photo studio in Albuquerque New Mexico until 1907 and made pictorial studies of Native Americans in the region. In collectible condition with seemingly no signs of wear to either the complete dust jacket save for a touch of shelf wear to the head of the DJ or the book itself. Even the cream-colored hardcover boards appear new and without any smudging or discoloration; a feat for a book this many decades old and handled by so many hands for signatures.
