19681505401968. Original album of this iconic work boldly signed by legendary musician Pete Townshend on the front panel. In very good condition. Record is included. Magic Bus: The Who on Tour is a 1968 compilation album by the British rock band The Who released exclusively in the United States by Decca Records. Despite the title’s implication of a live performance the album does not feature concert recordings; rather it assembles previously released studio tracks from earlier albums and singles such as “Run Run Run†“Doctor Doctor†and the hit single “Magic Bus.†Issued to capitalize on the commercial momentum generated by the success of that single the compilation served as a marketing strategy to sustain The Who’s growing popularity in the American market. While not considered part of the band’s core discography by the members themselves Magic Bus: The Who on Tour remains an interesting artifact of late-1960s rock culture and the record industry’s efforts to package and promote British Invasion artists to a transatlantic audience. unknown
1708K9SEABNZ7Y5VParis 1708. 12mo. widow of François Muguet Contemporary mottled calf richly gold-tooled spine with red title-label marbled endpapers red edges. 24 485 4 3 blank pp. First edition of the second French translation of a history of the conquest of Spain by the Moors detailing events from 712 to 761 CE a description of Spain during the same period and a biography of Almanzor ca. 938-1002 the Islamic ruler of the Iberian Peninsula at that time. "This was a false chronicle halfway between a history and a novel of chivalry supposedly translated from an Arabic manuscript by a fictitious historian called Tarif Abentarique that Luna had found in El Escorial" García-Arenal & Mediano. In the account first published in 1592 the Iberian Peninsula is saved by the Arab newcomers from a state of evil and corruption under the Visigoth rulers. Luna's account is a defence of Arab culture in Spain independently of the religion of Islam and particularly defending the Arabic language. "His writings attempt to reimagine the origins and history of Christianity in the Peninsula such that its inhabitants of Arab origin may be seen as "natural" or "native" .; therefore they cannot be expelled as alien invaders . but rather and above all may aspire to honors and privileges" García-Arenal & Mediano.Miguel de Luna ca. 1550-1615 was a Spanish physician of Arabic descent who also published a treatise on bathing. Known for his knowledge of Arabic he worked as a translator for King Philip II of Spain and the Spanish Inquisition. With owner's inscriptions on the back of the first fly-leaf and the title-page. Binding lightly worn at the extremities; with a few spots; a good copy.l Brunet I cols. 16-17; García-Arenal & Mediano The orient in Spain pp. 155-164; not in Blackmer. unknown
55675Brighton: The Moon Society after 1920 before 1953. Oblong folio 28.5 × 34.5 cm. Contemporary half-cloth over marbled boards; 57 leaves of embossed text in Moon type. In lieu of a title page a leaf with transcribed raised alphabet is included: "A Simplified System of Embossed Reading for the Use of the Blind Invented by William Moon L.L.D &c.". Dedication sticker to inside front board: "Embossed by the Moon Society for the British and Foreign Bible Society". Boards lightly scuffed and soiled; corners bumped; some fraying to lower hinges; toned throughout due to stock; still about very good. Volume one of two of the Gospel According to St. John embossed in Moon type a form of raised type for the visually impaired based on the Latin alphabet developed in 1843-1845 by Dr. William Moon 1818-1894. The only non-Braille system that survives to this day Moon type is most popular among the elderly and readers who went blind later in life as was the case with Moon himself. Born in Kent Moon learned to read by sight first before losing his vision completely by the age of 21. With the loss of vision he also gave up his plans to join the clergy becoming instead a teacher for the blind and a philanthropist. As a teacher Moon focused on the development of the new raised type based on the simplified Latin characters which were easier to remember for those who knew letters by sight but were less spatially economical than the Braille system. The first Moon type book appeared in 1847. To promote the new system Moon founded and funded the Moon Society in Brighton Sussex publishing primarily devotional books during his lifetime. His ambitious project to release the entirety of the Bible in monthly instalments was completed in 1858 printed in 60 volumes. The present volume of the the Gospel According to St. John appears to be a later edition of the original instalment. "When Dr. Moon died in 1894 over 500 titles were printed in his type in over 419 languages and dialects" See: Gabriel Farell The Story of Blindness p. 103. Notably the geographic breadth of the use of the Moon type followed British colonial interests in India and China.

In the United States the Moon system competed with and superseded the initially more popular embossed Boston Line Type. Developed in the 1830s and used extensively at the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts Boston Line Type was similarly based on the Latin alphabet. Moon first promoted his system with a traveling tour he undertook in the US with his daughter Adelaide Moon in 1880s. His son the ophthalmologist Robert Moon emigrated to Philadelphia in the same period and continued to promote his father's system by publishing the Moon magazine starting in 1905 and helping to manage the Moon Society until his death 1914. The present volume was apparently published in Brighton at the Queens's Road address where the Moon Society was based 1915-1960 and where Moon lived with his family prior to his death with this volume most likely published in the 1920s based on the binding and paper.

As of May 2026 KVK OCLC show one copy of St. John's Gospel published in Moon type at Cambridge University with no holdings in North America. unknown

A most unusual Christmas gift annual.

William Moon contracted smallpox as a young child and by age 22 had lost his sight completely. Frustrated by the quality of embossed reading systems he had tried he developed his own system based on roman lettering with portions of the letters omitted in order to make the characters more discernible to the touch. Moon's system was easy to master particularly for those who had learned to read before losing their sight and it became very successful. However nowadays examples are rarely encountered.
Moon Society paperback books

1858170653Landport: Annett and Robinson 1858. First edition of Moon's account of the shipwreck and aftermath of the Osprey as a steward on the ship. This work is institutionally rare outside Australasia appearing in five libraries only. The Osprey was a part of the 1844 experimental squadron to test new technology on ships and was equipped with 12 guns instead of the usual 10. She was sent to New Zealand to assist the British in the Flagstaff War but arrived after the conflict had ended and was redirected north. The ship was wrecked on 11 March 1846 after mistaking the Herekino Heads for the entrance to the Hokianga River due to poor weather conditions. "The vessel stands upright on her keel in the sand and is but slightly injured the heel of the keel only being knocked away. The stores are being landed and the crew are assisted by 150 natives who are well disposed and behave very friendly and peaceably" The Times. The crew's lieutenant Octavius Benthall alongside four men attempted to sail in a pinnace to reach Hokianga. Unfortunately they never made it and their boat was discovered nine miles from their destination. The remaining crew lived in tents on the beach for about seven weeks helped by local Mori people. "A second smaller ship the Aurora was dispatched to provide assistance and succour to the crew of the Osprey though incredibly she met the same fate as the Osprey being driven ashore by mad winds after her anchor chain snapped. The Aurora came to rest alongside the wreck of the very ship she was meant to assist. Adding insult to injury and compounding the black humour of the situation there was nobody around when the Aurora made land as the Osprey crew had already left embarking on a gruelling sodden tramp over rugged country south to the Hokianga and then on to the Bay of Islands" New Zealand Herald.
