Ma anche una riflessione sulle regole non scritte dell'astropolitica che governava "l'ufficio astronauti" negli anni d'oro della corsa allo spazio, e lo spaccato di una realtà mitizzata che ne evidenzia luci e ombre. Cunningham prende spunto dal disastro dell'Apollo 1, nel gennaio del 1967, prova a terra con incendio e morte dei tre astronauti, che l'ha toccato da vicino, come membro dell'equipaggio di riserva prima e della commissione d'inchiesta subito dopo. Da una parte critica Armstrong e Scott per la maldestra gestione della missione Gemini 8 e per la sua troppo frettolosa conclusione (marzo 1966), dall'altra sostiene che nessun altro avrebbe saputo fare meglio di Armstrong nell'allunaggio dell'Apollo 11 (luglio 1969) e che la missione di Scott sulla Luna, Apollo 15 (luglio 1971), rappresentò la migliore esplorazione scientifica di tutto il programma Apollo. Un libro che aiuta a capire cosa ha reso grande il programma Apollo e suggerisce cosa fare per recuperare lo spirito di allora e ripartire per i nuovi e più avvincenti orizzonti che ci aspettano.
