He was brought up at Jefferson Barracks Missouri south of St. Louis. Smith received his A.B. and M.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and continued his studies at Columbia University and Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Smith is the author of ten collections of poetry of which two were finalists for the National Book Award. Frontis portrait. 24 poems and two short plays by Moon Kwan a native of China who attended USC in Los Angeles and UC Berkeley. Along the way he befriended Witter Bynner to whom one of the poems is addressed and George Sterling who wrote the introduction to the plays among other members of the literati and he worked as a technical advisor to D. W. Griffith on his film Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl. Kwan returned to Hong Kong in the 1930s where he worked in the film industry.
