L'astro che illumina le notti, la luna crescente o calante, e soprattutto la luna cinerea dei noviluni, traspare attraverso i personaggi fiabeschi e dà senso alle loro curiose storie. Presenza costante nelle favole di tutti i popoli, la luna appare, sotto infiniti volti, nella mitologia greca; come annuncio di Resurrezione, porta la novella cristiana («Ergo annuntiavit luna mysterium Christi», diceva sant'Ambrogio); e infine, le stesse "fiabe scientifiche" adottano il puntuale e circolare stile lunare. Sermonti rievoca "storie della luna" esquimesi, boscimani, ottentotte, russe e inglesi; analizza i miti lunari evocati nelle storie di Medea, Prometeo, Edipo, Romolo, Eva, Maria, i re Magi, tra le altre; svela i significati nascosti nelle "fiabe del novilunio", come Biancaneve, Cappuccetto Rosso, Pelle d'Asino, Cenerentola, Hänsel e Gretel. «La luna è una viva parte di noi, conclude Sermonti, situata nella lontananza [...].
