The text addresses conditions affecting the eyelids lacrymal apparatus ocular muscles conjunctiva cornea iris crystalline lens and glaucoma. It also contains sections on vision testing and optical defects. Laurence and Moon were leading British specialists known for their association with what became known as Laurence-Moon syndrome. This American edition circulated their methods among medical practitioners in the United States. Robert Charles Moon 1844–1914 was an ophthalmologist who practiced medicine in England and the United States in Philadelphia where he was very engaged with helping the blind.
