It is an excellent reference for collectors, easy to use, and provides a broad exposure to books in any given subject. The collection is based on the collection of Thomas Hunt, a merchant who gained his fortune in China during the middle of the 19th century. A lifelong collector, Hunt gave his collection to the Essex Institute, where it is currently housed. The Library contains about 4000 volumes. It was with the purpose of increasing the library's usefulness to scholars that the current catalog was compiled. Subjects are Chinese in America, Jews in China, Buddhism, folklore, secret societies, and dozens of others.

Thaddeus Mason Harris (1768-1842) was a Massachusetts clergyman, activist, and author. His father was a Revolutionary patriot, who died during the war, laving his family destitute. But young Thaddeus could earn his way as a scholar. He taught at Worcester a year, studied theology, and in 1781 was appointed librarian at Harvard. He accepted a call in 1793 from the First Unitarian church at Dorchester, and remained its pastor for over 45 years. In those years he was an enthusiastic mason and served as the Past Grand Chaplain to the Grand Lodge, and Chaplain to the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Massachusetts. This pro-Masonic work was first published around 1801 by Samuel Etheridge, Charlestown, MA. This edition is perhaps scarcer than that earlier version. OCC 17. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
