Hopkins studied divinity under Jonathan Edwards and became his biographer. He was the pastor for the First Congregational Church in Newport R.I. for decades. He developed a new system of Calvinistic theology known as "consistent Calvinism" and coining the concept of "disinterested benevolence". It was further developed at Yale's Divinity School as a New England theology which heavily influenced the Second Great Awakening.
