186019197New York: A. J. Davis & Co. Publishers 1860. First edition. Some light soiling and wear; slight wear to the upper corner of the rear wrapper; in very good condition. Original printed wrappers 7.5 x 4.75 inches 12 pages. Free thought texts perhaps translated from French and here published by the leading American Spiritualist Andrew Jackson Davis at the office where he was also publishing the first volume of his serial The Herald of Progress. The burden of each short piece would tend to uphold Davis's spiritualist-inspired anti-Christian viewpoint: Durais engages in modern textual analysis to suggest that the Noah story as retold in Genesis is composed of two sources or versions with the occasional contradiction: "The reader is at liberty to make his election as to which to believe. The Bible generously offers him two Floods to satisfy his faith." The latter piece casts the ministry of Jesus Christ without mentioning him by name as a myth or fable. OCLC notes only copies held at the British Library the source of the digitized Google Books copy; no authors under the name Durais found in the NUC nor does the CCFr suggest any obvious conjunctions between a Durais and the title word Sphinx or indeed an obvious candidate for Durais as an author at all. The only other work easily found under the name of Durais is the kindred title in English published by Bela Marsh in Boston the same year Thirty-two wonders or the skill displayed in the Miracles of Jesus the skills "meaning not thereby to indicate the skill of Jesus but of the Evangelists in inventing miracles that would suit the religious tastes of those for whom they wrote." Two stab holes suggesting previous stitching. Pencil ownership signature to the front wrapper. A. J. Davis & Co., Publishers, unknown books
173719585London: Printed for J. Roberts in Warwick Lane 1737. First edition. A little light soiling and foxing to a few leaves; otherwise a fine copy. 8vo recent half calf and marbled sides leather label on the upper board lettered in gilt Farmer on Demoniacks viii 116 pages. The Reader will find every Passage both in the Old Testament and the New except those of the Gospels which are at present the Subject of Debate and therefore must be determined by the meaning of the word Demon in other places He will find I say every passage considered in the following Papers; and the true Import of that Word is shewn not to be Evil Spirits or Devils but Ghosts or Souls of departed Men." The clergyman and controversialist Sykes ca. 1684-1756 had earlier in 1737 published his Enquiry into the meaning of demoniacks in the New Testament. By T.P.A.P.O.A.B.I.T.C.O.S. and launched the far-ranging contemporary gospel demoniac controversy of which this is an early entry answering the critic Leonard Twells. Sykes seems also to have suggested that the Gadarene incident might be best explained by illness or physical infirmity opening the way toward a model of mental illness as an explanation of so-called possession. Early references all seem to assign responsibility to Sykes for this Further Enquiry see the 1882 BMC and Notes & Queries Ser. 4 VI July 23 1870 though ESTC seems to take no stand. See the OUDNB for more on the controversial career of Sykes; see also H. C. Erik Midelfort "The Gadarene Demoniac in the English Enlightenment" in Michelson Taylor and Venables. A Linking of Heaven and Earth: Studies in Religious and Cultural History in Honor of Carlos M.N. Eire. Routledge 2016. pp. 53 et seq. for an extensive summary of the controversy. Bound with the half-title. Printed for J. Roberts in Warwick Lane, unknown books
