Affermato studioso di letteratura inglese (celebre e celebrato il suo lavoro su William Blake) e direttore dell’Istituto di Cultura Francese a Londra fino ai contrasti con De Gaulle di cui mal tollerava l’impostazione tecnocratica dell’istituzione, Saurat si ritirò negli anni ’50 in Provenza, componendo poesie in lingua occitana e riprendendo il filo degli studi sull’occultismo, la tradizione e il misticismo da sempre parte della sua ricerca letteraria. Questo L’Atlantide et le règne des géants apparve in francese nel 1954 e conobbe grande successo e numerose traduzioni.

br. Nel prologo del "Timeo" Platone ci parla per la prima volta della mitica isola di Atlantide, ponendo le basi per la creazione di un'utopia immortale. Nel 1841, nelle sue celebri Etudes sur le «Timée» de Platon, il primo commento scientifico al complesso dialogo platonico, Thomas-Henri Martin pubblicava una lunga "Dissertation sur l'Atlantide", una rassegna di tutte le storie e le infinite ipotesi legate al continente scomparso. Con un linguaggio lineare e netto, che rivela a ogni pagina le vaste e profonde conoscenze dello studioso, la "Dissertation" riconduce l'"Atlantide" di Platone al luogo suo proprio, riposizionandola in un complesso e suggestivo palcoscenico mitico.
