Il mito di Altantide riletto in maniera inedita per scoprire cosa ancora ci colpisce di questo racconto. Al di là della distinzione tra vero e falso del racconto quel che importa è la sua capacità di dire qualcosa di fondamentale sulla nostra cultura. L'oceano misterioso, insidioso e per questo un abisso di fascino per l'uomo. Luogo ostile, ma proprio per questo simbolo del mistero dell'essere altro. I due autori studiano le narrazioni classiche del mito, ma sanno riattualizzarle per rendercele familiari e ancora indicative di un prossimo futuro di riconciliazione con la natura e l'acqua, fonte di vita.

Pittore napoletano allievo di Gemito, Gennaro D’Amato lavorò con molti periodici e giornali (in particolare L’Illustrazione Italiana) con uno stile di “sintetica violenza” che portò anche nell’illustrazione per Motta e soprattutto Salgari, cui legò il suo nome (v. Faeti, Guardare le Figure) di fatto codificando l’apparenza di Sandokan. I molti viaggi intrapresi durante la sua carriera giornalistica lo portarono a raccogliere i materiali per alcune opere sull’origine della civiltà, che pubblicò negli ultimi anni della sua vita. “… pure la verità si farà strada contro le ostilità dei negatori dell’Atlantide, imbevuti di false teorie.” afferma l’autore nella prefazione di quest’opera che attraverso l’esame del Timeo di Platone e di dati archeologici, filologici e geologici sposa la tesi di una collocazione mesoamericano-equatoriale del continente perduto, “civiltà madre” che portò i primi rudimenti di civilizzazione in Europa e Africa attraverso l’Etiopia.
