Published in 1800 during the raging Napoleonic wars with France see also the somewhat later inscription to a French ship's captain below. Samuel Johnson 1709-1784 or more commonly "Dr. Johnson" or "the Great Cham" was a brilliant English writer devout Anglican and Tory who made his reputation as a poet essayist moralist literary critic biographer editor and most lastingly as a lexicographer. His Dictionary of the English Language is noteworthy for its extent comprehensiveness and use of pithy definitions. James Boswell of course memorialized the life and sayings of the great doctor. So uncommon it has NOT been identified by Courtney & Smith Johnson Bibliography with Supplement e.g. pp.57-59. The eighth edition of A Dictionary of the English Language appeared in 1799; the ninth edition in 1805. The upper cap of the spine is missing and the volume is rubbed with wear evident along the hinges and corners but the sewing is strong and the pages are clean with minimal toning. Minor brown offset from the fine engraved frontispiece of Dr. Johnson onto the title page. Bookstamp of bookseller "E. Desbois Bordeaux"; marbled endpapers. Interesting ink presentation on ffe: "To / J or "T" Beck Esqr. / commanding the French / packett Esteva on / her passage from Bordeaux / to Vera Cruz in Nov. 1831 ~ by his most obedt / humble servant / L. Title page in red and black with a woodcut vignette an open book on a shell with decorations 7 full-page 3.3 x 1.6 cm! woodcuts depicting important scenes from the Bible 1 as frontispiece and 1 opening each of the 5 books and the appendix each book and the appendix with a headpiece built up from typographic ornaments followed by a drop-title in red and ending with a typographic ornament in red as a tailpiece. Set in roman type with incidental italic. 80 pp. First and only Dutch edition deluxe issue with the title page and 12 other pages printed in red and black of De Groots thumb Bible one of the curious miniature books printed in the Netherlands in the mid-18th century in a tiny roman type 37 mm/20 lines or 5.5 point as a curiosity and collectors item or to be used as a Bible in a dollhouse. The text is an abstract or summary of the contents of the Bible in five books and an appendix containing a prayer incipit: The illustrations and ornamental headpieces all in miniature and in the present deluxe issue also the printing in red and black make the book a show piece for the skill of 18th-century Dutch printing enhanced here by the contemporary gold-tooled miniature binding. Abkouda records De Groot offering this edition in five kinds of bindings and unbound at prices ranging from 4 to 30 stuivers so he probably commissioned bindings from several binders. The present copy is probably what he calls a Frans bandje 9 stuivers. 'Publisher's red morocco gilt inlays of black morocco in centre of each cover with cross and initials JHS in gilt within gilt-tooled sun tooling. Elaborate gilt-tooled borders with corner pieces of intertwined arabesques. Gilt-tooled spine flat back in three compartments with egg-shaped tools in each compartment. Gilt edges' Spielmann; the binding is essentially in fine condition with the contents near-fine. Spielmann 18 recording a minor variant printed by 'Darton & Harvey Gracechurch-Street London' with 15 plates: 'Very similar to the Newbery Bible 1780 but with some alterations. The preface for example starts with the words: "It is not a very pleasant reflection" instead of "It is a melancholy reflection". Rare remarkable "pocket" London almanack; an entirely engraved miniature publication for the year 1788. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title page four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia the Prince of Orange the Duke of Brunswick and the Duke of York common notes including the dominical letters golden number and religious festive days for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral a calendar an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign a list of mayors and sheriffs 1767-1788 one page listing bank holidays and an overview of the Royal family King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is according to Bondy of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves.The binding shows signs of wear with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase. Created to fit into small containers good bonsan convey the texture color and form of natural mountainous scenery. These small tray or pot landscapes have their origins in 10th-century China.<br /> <BR> <BR> The text in our scroll is a distillation of the teachings of SÅami ShinsŠ相阿彌真相 1472-1525 painter art critic and artistic adviser to the Ashikaga shoguns in Kyoto master of the tea and incense ceremonies and landscape gardener. He established rules for and a school SÅami ryu of garden design and flower arrangement as well as the rules and styles for bonsan. “As a landscape gardener he designed two of the most celebrated Zen temple gardens in Japan: the RyÅan Temple garden in Kyoto an outstanding example of kare sansui a dry landscape technique in which combinations of stones and sand are used to suggest mountains and water; and the Daisei-in garden a miniature reproduction of a natural landscape also in the kare sansui style.
