Boards ruled in gilt spine stamped in gilt. First five leaves lacking outer corner somewhat affecting text. Good. With a biblical verse for everyday of the year including February 29th. "The smallest series of Bible selections for every day of the year is entitled Small Rain Upon the Tener Herb. This title like Dew Drops is taken from Deuteronomy 32:2 and is itself an extract from the full text which is: 'My doctrine shall drop as the rain My speech shall distil as the dew; As the small rain upon the tender grass And as the showers upon the herb.' Small Rain was first published about 1830 by our friends the Religious Tract Society in London. It is one of the commonest miniature books of the period and went through some twenty editions between 1830 and 1840. Most copies measure 1 1/4 by 1 inches consist of 128 pages with easily readable six-point type. Smaller than Dew Drops and Daily Food ths devotional morsel was mainly for children." 1840673Philadelphia Pa. 1840. Calling Card printed one side only. 40 x 75 mm. 1 ½  x 3 inches. Painter's name scratched out and "Miss Louise Bradley West Springfield" is penciled in Engraved border pinholes.  James W. Williams was a miniature portrait painter. He also experimented with early photographic processes to produce his portraits. He was born in England about 1787 and set up shop in Philadelphia. The Smithsonian holds two of his works; a Talbotype paper print with applied color of Edward Robinson Squibb and an ivory type of two girls untitled. Ivory types were positive photographic prints resembling a hand-painted ivory miniature and were first produced in the mid-1850s. As the term suggests some of these images were made on thin sheets of actual ivory or artificial ivory made of pigmented and hardened gelatin. Louise Bradley 1818-aft 1880 of West Springfield Massachusetts acquired Williams's calling card and used it as her own in this instance since she crossed out his name and penciled in her own. She married a farmer Charles White and lived and died in West Springfield. Portrait miniatures began to flourish in 16th century Europe and the art was practiced during the 17th century and 18th century but the development of photography contributed to the decline in the popularity of miniatures. . unknown books

A delicate brilliantly executed example of late 19th century miniature book design this title presents biblical quotations in a devotional format- with one phrase for each morning and evening of a month. Lovely chromolithographs are interspersed throughout the text. This title is exceptionally rare with OCLC listing no libraries possessing a copy of it. Indeed OCLC lists the only known copy as being in the collection of famed miniature book collector Ruth E. Adomeit. Front cover a bit rubbed and darkened with gilt decoration somewhat dulled. There are also poems for songs around the table and the meaning of flowers. The compact book overall ties in nicely some well-appreciated characters from Anthony Abbot the Great to Cinderella. Chapbooks were inexpensive and usually anonymous printings of these popular themes. Marcotte & Co . everything made to perfect scale . sold to L.C. who refused it . Re-sold to the women's prisoners of the Insane Asylum at Philadelphia where the poor women when 'good' are allowed to play with it." Unrecorded in OCLC we assume this was printed for private distribution by a member of the Bacon or Howland family.
