Company of Stationers Contemporary elaborately gold-tooled black morocco both boards show a beautiful geometrical design of gold-tooled black white and green morocco gilt edges in a matching slipcase. With a steel-engraved armorial title page a four-page steel-engraved view of the mansions of the Earl of Spencer and of the Earl of Ellesmere in green park and a steel-engraved half-page armorial vignette. 24 pp. Ornately bound "pocket" London almanack; an entirely steel-engraved miniature publication for the year 1851. The almanack contains an explanation of its use including an overview of the dominical letter golden number epact and cycle of the sun for the year 1851 a 4 page view of the "mansions of the Earl Spencer and the Earl of Ellesmere in the green park" engraved by H. Adlard an overview of sun and moon eclipses in that year the calendar a "regal table" overview of British monarchs since 1066 an overview of the Royal family of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their children lists of great officers of state of Great Britain and Ireland an overview of stamps bills and promissory notes and finally a list of "transfer days at the bank &c." including the South Sea House and India House.The London Almanack was published by the Company of Stationers from the end of the 17th century until the end of the 19th century. They are of special interest for their fine publisher's bindings but also for their striking views of London.With a manucript owner's inscription on the front blank endpaper recto of the engraved title page in pencil "A. S. Wossley" and pencil annotations between the printed lines of the calendar. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear the binding is slightly damaged at the head and foot of the spine not affecting the integrity of the binding. With 8 full-page engravings. 64 pp. Beautiful miniature almanac for the year 1819 published by Janet one of the most well-known producers of miniature books of his time. The work is a so-called "almanach chantant" a miniature almanac of less than 3 centimetres in size with 64 pages and illustrations. Typically intended for women they were usually beautifully bound and contained poetry and love songs. The present example which has curiously been bound upside down contains several illustrated love songs some of which are allegorical and a calendar. The illustrations depict men and women engaged in a variety of different activities dressed in the fashion of the time. Several issues of the almanac were published in the same year with a different number of illustrations and some with the publisher's name on the title page.The boards and spine have been somewhat rubbed. The almanac only had a short run as it was only published for the years 1843-1845.The bookblock is partly detached from the binding. Corners lightly bumped one spot of light rubbing to gilt on upper cover isolated spots of faint foxing but A VERY FINE SPECIMEN clean and bright inside and out the fore-edge paintings well preserved.<br/> <br/> This delightful miniature edition is adorned with two fore-edge paintings showing different views of the title city both visible when the book is open to the title page of part II of Tasso's Crusader epic "Jerusalem Delivered." Given the restricted area available for a "canvas" our artist has done a remarkable job both in the level of detail and the sense of space and grandeur the scenes evoke so it is not surprising that this volume was in the Irene Winterstein Collection of Important Miniature Books Christie's sale of 10 March 2000 lot 277 fetching $1455 all in. This is a rare miniature edition: Welsh records only one copy in her bibliography. Our copy belonged to Irish bibliophile and philanthropist William Dunville 1812-1874 who was also a whiskey magnate and magistrate. After its first founder John Dunville died William Dunville his only surviving son became the next chairman of Dunville & Co Belfast who are still famous for their whiskey today. He headed the company from 1851 to 1874. David Passigli unknown

This is a later printing of the edition that W. & J. Bolles first brought out around 1831. The woodcut illustrations are charmingly primitive.
