19145026Regina SK: The Carbon Studio 1914. Mounted Photograph. Very Good. Lord Strathcona's Horse seen here recreating at a Horse Show in Regina in 1914 between actions in the Boer War and WWI. The team proudly poses with their dog mascot while displaying a long line of captured booty - 31 event ribbons. One rider wears his team shirt with the letters "L. S. H. R. C." "Lord Strathcona's Horse Royal Canadians" stitched onto the front while the horses are equipped with gymnastic-style saddlery. A 7.5 x 9.75 inch wide photograph titled in negative "Lord Strathcona's Horse - Horse Show Regina April 23 1914." mounted onto a 11.75 x13.5 inches wide photographer's commercial mount with "The Carbon Studio / Ry. St. Regina" stamped at lower right. Photo w. some fading light soil and marks ; card mount w. pin holes at corners glue repair to upper corner and name penciled on verso "Pvt. Green" A proud and capable looking team of professional riders. "Cowboys were called upon again in 1899 when Britain and thus Canada became involved in the Boer War. The Boers or Afrikaners were a unique type type of enemy – an army of prairie veldt ranchers who fought guerrilla-style on horseback. Their logical counterparts were Canada's mounted police and cowboys and in 1900 Donald Smith better known as Lord Strathcona raised a mounted company of 400 men from western Canada half from the NWMP and half from the horse and cattle ranches. Based in Calgary and under the command of Col. 1908154498Toronto ca. 1908-36. Very good. 10 9x14 cm b&w photo postcards on front side. Each in its own clear pocket attached to backerboard and covered with cellophane. On rear are 6 more cards with addresses postmarks and messages exposed. Backerboard is a bit cracked on this side and the cards are sliding around. A more secure form of permanent display will be needed. <br/><br/>One photo is of nine young men. The other photos are of various members of the group usually in cowboy or hunting attire. However we think they're playing dress-up not real cowboys since they're seated on barrels holding rifles in front of a painted backfrop of a log cabin and wilderness lake. unknown

1925H34232Pittsburgh: Trinity Court Studio 1925. Hardcover. Very good. Folio 17 x 15 inches brown cloth stamped in gilt on front cover with 9 photos on paper measuring 13.5 x 9.5 inches the images themselves measuring 9 x 6.5 inches showing the 7 judges individually plus two group photos. Photos appear to be signed faintly in pencil by R. Johnson. On the brown pages on which these photos are mounted the individual judges are identified in Conté crayon. Very good with 1921 certificate broadside from the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association declaring Porter a member in good standing 14 x 11 inches somewhat spotty and soiled. William David Porter 1850-1930 was admitted to the Allegheny County Bar in 1872 and served as District Attorney for Allegheny County from 1884 to 1890. From 1891 to 1898 he was a judge in the Court of Common Pleas and as such adjudicated some of the trials resulting from the Homestead Strike of 1892. in 1898 he rose to the Superior Court and was the presiding judge at the time of his death in 1930.
